A sequel to one of action movie superstar Keanu Reeves’ most beloved franchises was announced back in 2024, but since then, we’ve heard nothing about it. So was it even real? How do you define ‘real’? We’re talking, of course, about The Matrix 5, and while things have been quiet since that initial announcement, it has been confirmed that, not only is the sci-fi action follow-up very real, but it’s also currently being written.
Released back in 1999 and written and directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix changed the face of modern science fiction and action cinema forever. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving, The Matrix centers on Keanu Reeves as a seemingly ordinary man, Thomas Anderson, aka Neo, an office drone and hacker who is contacted by a small group of mysterious strangers and led to the truth: the world we live in is merely a computer-generated simulation.
Featuring long, leather jackets, flick phones, and sunglasses indoors, The Matrix introduced the ground-breaking “bullet time” concept, which would be copied for years to come. Combining slick martial arts action, explosive shootouts, post-apocalyptic grit, and philosophical musings, The Matrix initially spawned two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, as well as all manner of comics, video games, and more.
The last audiences visited the world of The Matrix was in 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, which took a surprisingly meta-approach to the saga, reintroducing Neo as a video game designer once again trapped in the titular simulation who must follow the white rabbit once more. Met with a middling response from both critics and audiences alike, The Matrix 5 is expected to deliver something more akin to the first three outings, and will be the first movie in the franchise helmed by someone other than the Wachowskis. That honor falls to The Martian and Lost writer Drew Goddard who, during a recent interview with ScreenRant, confirmed that The Matrix 5 is still happening…
“[The Matrix 5 is] still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”
At present, plot details for The Matrix 5 have not been revealed, nor is it currently known whether the likes of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne will return. All that we have to go on so far is Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman’s initial statement, which hinted at a possible change of characters and story, teasing “a new idea” from Goddard that will honor “what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
While we wait to see what Drew Goddard has in store for the next chapter in The Matrix saga, the writer’s latest project, the sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary, has been hailed as a “masterpiece” and is due to land in theaters on March 20.
