It’s fair to say March will be a massive month for Newcastle United, and it all starts tonight as we welcome Man Utd to St James’ Park (8.15pm KO).
We’re in the last 16 of the FA Cup and Champions League, but our Premier League prospects aren’t looking pretty, with just one win in our last seven games and our rivals are starting to open up a gap between ourselves and those European spots.
That was evident over the weekend, as sides like Everton (beating us 3-2), Brentford, Fulham, and Brighton all won, while Bournemouth and Sunderland also gained a point on us after our defeat.
Sadly, the gap between ourselves and sides above us got bigger last night, as Sunderland and Everton both picked up victories. Despite being without Roefs, Mukiele, Xhaka and Brobbey, the Mackems won 1-0 at Leeds, while Everton followed by their 3-2 win at St James’ Park with a 2-0 home victory over Burnley.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth (9th) and Brentford (7th) took a point each in a 0-0 draw at the Vitality on Tuesday night, while Liverpool (5th) lost 2-1 at Wolves in what what perhaps the only result that went our way, not that I see us making up that 12 point deficit!
See the latest Premier League table below ahead of tonight’s games in the Premier League:
So, 11th place Sunderland are now four points above us, meaning we’ll remain behind the Mackems even if we beat Man Utd tonight. Brentford, meanwhile, are eight clear of us in 7th, Everton are seven points clear of us in 8th and Bournemouth are up to 9th on 40 points, while 10th spot Fulham (also 40 points) take on West Ham tonight.
