Tracker Season 3 Completely Chickens Out Of Colter’s First True Gut-Punch Twist

Tracker Season 3 Completely Chickens Out Of Colter’s First True Gut-Punch Twist

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Tracker season 3, episode 10, “Fallout.”Instead of delivering an emotional gut-punch that could have been game-changing to the show, Tracker chickens out of it. CBS’s 2025-2026 TV schedule is now back in full swing with the return of the most-watched show on the small screen. For context, Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw was in a car wreck in the cliffhanger ending of Tracker season 3 winter finale. When it resumes its storytelling, it picks up right where it left off.

During Tracker season 3’s midseason ending, Keaton returned to ask for help this time. The retired police was trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious disappearance of his former partner, and knowing Colter’s abilities, he was the perfect person for the job. Unfortunately for them, the case ended up being more complicated than initially anticipated. Tracker season 3 ended 2025 with the possibility of Keaton dying, which “Fallout” addresses.

While Tracker‘s first 2026 episode starts by showing the immediate aftermath of the car crash, it keeps viewers wondering if Keaton is going to survive, considering his substantial injuries. It’s worth noting that before their automobile went off the mini-cliff, he was already nursing a serious injury, so the chances of his survival were smaller than Colter’s. At the end of “Fallout,” Tracker reveals that Keaton is alive.

Jensen Ackles in Tracker

Jensen Ackles’ Perfect Supernatural Replacement Forces CBS To Take Its Biggest Risk In Years

Six years after Supernatural wrapped its run, Jensen Ackles’ perfect replacement is clear, but it forces CBS to make a big change to its programming.

It’s great to see Keaton not succumbing to his near-death experience, especially since it means that Brent Sexton’s fan-favorite character can still return moving forward. Although Colter has Reenie and Randy for support, they mostly do their jobs remotely, leaving him on his own on the ground the majority of the time. Keaton is one of the few reliable allies that he can always call for support.

That said, Keaton’s death would be a massive shock to Tracker, emphasizing how dangerous this job is. It would have marked the first on-screen death of someone not just close to Colter but someone who had endeared themselves to the viewers. While Ashton Shaw’s death is at the center of Tracker‘s storytelling, it doesn’t have as much of an emotional connection because the public didn’t really spend time with him.

How Keaton’s Death Could Have Revitalized The Emotional Aspect Of Tracker

Unlike many crime procedurals, Tracker lives and dies by Colter. Because of the nature of his work, it’s difficult to cultivate any kind of sustainable relationship for him. As it nears the end of season 3, it has yet to feel like he is truly in danger, because the show is nothing without him. Establishing stakes will have to be tied to people close to him like Keaton. If Tracker pushed through with his death, it would have raised the stakes of the series.

Additionally, it would have also humanized Colter. Until now, he has been very successful at being everyone’s savior in Tracker, which is the main appeal of the show. That said, as it gears up for a fourth season, there needs to be some kind of evolution for both the show and its beloved lead character. Seeing him actively grieving Keaton would have opened more personal storytelling for Tracker. This will make it extra compelling moving forward.
