The Night Agent has returned to Netflix, and while viewer numbers are down for Season 3, it’s still a draw for the streamer. Season 2 saw the show’s core characters, Peter (Gabriel Basso) and Rose (Luciane Buchanan), reunite to take down a terrorist, demonstrating that Rose had potential beyond just sitting behind a computer screen. However, audiences weren’t as invested that time around, believing her additional focus to be unrealistic.
Instead of finding a logical way to bring Rose back into the mix again while keeping the focus on Peter, the show simply wrote her off for Season 3. Her departure was set up at the end of Season 2 once Peter realized that his closeness with Rose was a liability for his job and, more importantly, a danger for her. It makes sense that Rose would ride off into the sunset and move on with her life, but this was the worst approach possible. Not only was Rose so integral to the series’ success in Season 1, but she was also too important to Peter to suggest that he’d let her go so easily.
Rose Was Completely Written Out of ‘The Night Agent’ Season 3
The Night Agent Season 2 maintained the show’s reputation as a fast-paced thriller with its high-stakes scenario and stacked ensemble cast. The season focused on both Peter’s abilities as an agent and Rose’s tremendous computer skills, but it also put her at the center of the action, integral to missions in a way she was uncomfortable with, despite often asking for it. Rose got involved in a way the FBI would never allow an average citizen to do, putting her life at risk and going against every protocol imaginable. Further, some fans found her irritating, demanding, and distracting.
On the flipside, however, some believe that Rose became the best character in Season 2, rising to the occasion more than once to help Peter and the FBI with their missions. Whether she was in front of a computer screen or decked out in a fancy dress, sneaking through a lavish home to get intel, she accomplished every task with incredible ease. This makes the decision to write her off all the more controversial.
Rose Is Essential to ‘The Night Agent’
While Rose isn’t seen in Season 3, she’s mentioned numerous times, including when Peter reveals to Isabel (Genesis Rodriguez) during a game of billiards that he has not gotten over her. The most heart-wrenching moment, however, is when Peter makes a pit stop at the FBI HR office to ask for his death benefits to be transferred to Rose. He’s told that he can only transfer them to a family member, so unless they’re married, it’s a no-go. Yes, Rose being gone allows Peter’s personal journey to flourish and leaves room for him to be vulnerable with others like Isabel and even Chelsea (Fola Evans-Akingbola). But ignoring the importance the character had in the first two seasons was a bad move.
That said, the decision doesn’t have to be final and might not be. Creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan told The Hollywood Reporter that The Night Agent is a show where people can come in and out. Chelsea, for example, did just that with only a minor role in Season 2, then a major one in Season 3. The same, then, could happen for Rose. “I really want to hold open the possibility that Rose will return in the right situation,” Ryan noted.
If they can find a way to bring Rose back for The Night Agent Season 4, it would be a better fix than removing her entirely from Peter’s life after building their love story up so much. If we learned anything from the end of Season 3, it’s that Peter deserves more in his personal life than he has gotten.
Rose is one of the only people Peter truly loves and trusts, and, unfortunately, he can’t have her in his life. Removing Rose addressed the way she pulled focus away from Peter’s story and appeased fans who didn’t like her much. But it neglected to appreciate how important she was to the show’s success in the first place. And, from a character perspective, how important she was to Peter. It’s easy to forget that Peter, the person, and Peter, the agent, are the same. Peter, the agent, will keep on going with or without Rose, but Peter the person needs her.
