After breaking new ground in Champions League, Newcastle United return to Premier League action as we host Everton at St James’ Park.
We ran out 4-1 winners in the reverse fixture at the Hill Dickinson Stadium back in November, and we’ll be wanting a repeat performance this afternoon to keep our hopes of qualifying for European football next season alive.
Here’s how the teams line up on Saturday afternoon in the North East:
Newcastle XI: Pope – Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall – Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton – Elanga, Woltemade, Gordon.
Subs: Ramsdale, Botman, Wissa, Barnes, Osula, J.Murphy, Willock, A.Murphy, Shahar
Everton: Pickford – O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko – Gana, Garner – McNeil, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye – Beto
There’s six changes from Eddie Howe to the team that won 3-2 against Qarabag midweek, as Anthony Gordon looks set to play out wide with Nick Woltemade moving back into the no.9 position.
In the defence, Lewis Hall and Malick Thiaw return to the XI in place of Alex Murphy and Sven Botman. Thiaw netted twice against the Toffees, and he could become the top scoring defender in the league if he repeats the feat.
Alex Murphy and Leo Shahar retain their place within the squad, with fellow youngster Sean Neave absent today.
And for the visitors, Beto is the big inclusion in place of the in-form Thierno Barry. Former Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford can expect a frosty reception like he always does, but we’ll need Gordon to remain focused against his old side and amidst rumours of a move in the summer.
A big three points is needed today, as we have a difficult March ahead of us. Howay The Lads!
