After an impressive run of movie and TV appearances in the early 2020s, Jonathan Majors got into major legal trouble after being found guilty of harassing and assaulting his former girlfriend in 2023. This came after that year started with him starring in Creed III alongside Michael B. Jordan and as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, the latter of which set him up to be the main villain in the MCU’s entire Multiverse Saga. Having not been cast in a major movie since the case first went public, Majors has been almost completely out of the movie news cycle for most of the last three years.
Now, Deadline is reporting that Majors is confirmed to star in a new untitled action movie from The Daily Wire and Bonfire Legend, with cameras set to roll this week in South Carolina. Kyle Rankin is directing the movie, which will also use a screenplay he wrote, but the story and other cast members are being kept under wraps. The plot is said to be reminiscent of ’80s and ’90s action movies like Red Dawn and Toy Soldiers, both of which centered on groups of teenage boys who had to team up to defeat a group of invading enemies. Ben Shapiro, founder of The Daily Wire, and Dallas Sonnier of Bonfire Legend will produce the film.
While production on this new movie is set to begin in the coming days, there is no information on when it will be released to the public or what the story will entail.
Recognized as a right-wing, conservative media outlet, The Daily Wire is known for bringing stars into the spotlight who have gone through some kind of legal issues or public “cancellation.” Most recently, former The Mandalorian star Gina Carano (who will also return to her roots as an MMA fighter soon) joined forces with the company for the movie Terror on the Prairie in 2022, which featured her as the leading star, developer, and producer. This came after her firing from The Mandalorian after two seasons of work as Cara Dune, following a series of social media posts comparing modern political discourse and the COVID-19 pandemic to the Holocaust.
After that, Travis Mills directed Frontier Crucible for The Daily Wire and Sonnier’s Bonfire Legend production companies, which featured Call Me By Your Name and The Social Network star Armie Hammer in a leading role. Hammer fell out of public favor after multiple victims accused him of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse and coercive behavior; leaked messages also alleged that he had cannibalistic fetishes and tendencies, leading to his agency and several high-profile projects dropping him from their rosters.
This comes almost two years after Majors was cast in his first project post-legal drama, Merciless, directed by Martin Villenueve (the younger brother of Dune director Denis Villeneuve) and developed by producer Christopher Tuffin. Tuffin also played a major role in the success of the 2022 movie Sound of Freedom, which was shrouded in controversy upon its release.
While Majors’ career outlook after being cast in this movie is still a question mark, fans will be curious to see where he goes now that he has a new job in place after his exit from the MCU and public fallout.
