February 26 – One of Bulgaria’s most celebrated footballers, Dimitar Berbatov, has been appointed as an adviser to Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov on youth and sports matters.
In his new role, Berbatov will support the government in developing and implementing policies related to sports, active lifestyle, and the development of young people across the country. Notably, he will serve in this capacity without any financial compensation.
“With a sense of responsibility towards the development of sport in Bulgaria, I take on the role of adviser on youth and sports. I accept this commitment without remuneration, driven solely by the desire to contribute my experience and energy to building a sustainable, long-term policy in this field,” Berbatov stated.
As a first step, he has launched a major initiative to engage with the sports community. A strategic survey will be sent to all licensed sports federations to gather information on the current state of various sports, the needs of clubs, and the challenges facing youth sports development.
The collected data will then be analysed by specialists to serve as the foundation for a long-term national sports and youth policy.
“Sport must be a national strategy. When the Prime Minister is committed to sport, it is a clear sign that the state will take purposeful care to promote sporting activities in our country,” Berbatov said during his first meeting with the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Gyurov echoed this sentiment, stating: “Sport not only guarantees physical and mental health — it builds character, individuals, and a strong society.”
Berbatov is widely regarded as one of Bulgaria’s greatest footballers, having been named Bulgaria’s Footballer of the Year a record seven times. During his professional career from 1999 to 2018, he played 918 official matches and scored 470 goals. With 67 goals for the Bulgarian national team, he shares the all-time scoring record with Hristo Bonev.
He began his European career at Bayer Leverkusen in 2001, before joining Tottenham Hotspur in May 2006 and then Manchester United in September 2008. With United, he won two Premier League titles and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008.
In the 2010/11 season, he finished as the Premier League’s top scorer with 31 goals, earning the Golden Boot. Across his entire time in England, he made 429 appearances and scored 256 goals.
