A historical night awaits us at St James’ Park as Eddie Howe and the lads look to confirm our place in the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time ever.
After our resounding 6-1 win over Qarabag in the first leg all-but-officially confirmed our place in the next round, all eyes will be on Friday’s draw to see who we will draw out of Chelsea and Stamford Bridge.
But Howe has reaffirmed his desire to keep momentum and spirits high, and wants to deliver a win tonight, hinting that a strong squad will be selected
Here’s how the teams lineup on Tuesday night:
Newcastle XI: Ramsdale – Trippier, Botman, Burn, A.Murphy – Tonali, Joelinton, Woltemade- Murphy, Osula, Barnes
Subs: Pope, Ruddy, Harris, Hall, Wissa, Gordon, Elanga, Willock, Shahar, Neave
Qarabag XI: Kochalski – Silva, Hüseynov, Medina, Jafarguliyev – Bicalho, Jankovic – Bolt, Montiel, Zoubir – Durán.
There’s SEVEN changes from Saturday’s game at the Etihad Stadium, with the biggest calls coming in the defence.
Aaron Ramsdale takes the place of Nick Pope, meanwhile Sven Botman has returned from injury to finally afford the suspended Malick Thiaw some much-deserved rest out of the squad
But the big inclusion is youngster Alex Murphy, who takes the place of Lewis Hall at left back.
And in the attack, Will Osula leads the line tonight, as Yoane Wissa isn’t fit enough to start just yet. Alongside him are Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy, with no place for last week’s Poker goalscorer Anthony Gordon in the XI.
Meanwhile Joelinton makes his first start in midfield for some time, and Nick Woltemade retains his place in the XI in the attacking midfield position.
For the visitors, Duran and Montiel remain a big threat despite our aggregate advantage, with Howe praising the striker a lot in his pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon.
Let’s enter the next stage of the competition on a tremendous high, and show one of Chelsea or Barcelona we mean serious business in the knockout stage, Howay The Lads!
