Sony’s live-action Spider-Noir series is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most intriguing shows in years. Set in the streets of 1930s New York, the new show looks to be full of major foes for Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir to brawl with.
From major mob bosses to new takes on classic superpowered rogues, the first teaser trailer for Spider-Noir promises multiple villains in the upcoming series. Excluding characters who are just rumors, like Mister Negative or Man-Spider, here are 5 villains in the upcoming Spider-Noir series ranked by threat level.
5
Cat Hardy
At the bottom of the threat scale, we have Felicia “Cat” Hardy (Li Jun Li), “a nightclub singer with ties to an underworld conspiracy”, this universe’s take on Black Cat. In the classic Marvel lore, Black Cat has been a thief, love interest, and occasional antagonist for Peter Parker’s Spider-Man.
Based on the new trailer, a similar dynamic is being teased with Spider-Man Noir. Rather than being a straightforward villain, Cat Hardy feels more like a femme fatale operating in morally gray territory, perhaps serving as a key informant in Spider-Noir’s investigation. However, one could easily see her playing both sides as well for her own ultimate gain.
4
Sandman
Played by Jack Huston, Spider-Noir will debut a brand-new version of Flint Marko, better known as The Sandman. Confirmed to be a bodyguard, likely for Silvermane, it doesn’t look like this version is fully made of sand like in the main Marvel universe.
Instead, this version will have tough skin that “feels like granite,” mirroring the original Sandman Noir from the comics, a brutal enforcer for the mob who earned his name for brutally killing his victims with his fists. That change makes him feel more grounded and brutal, fitting the gritty aesthetic of Spider-Noir.
3
Molten Man
Molten Man ups the threat level considerably. In the original Marvel Universe, Mark Raxton’s metallic, heat-generating body is capable of intense flames, radiation, and near invulnerability. While we do get a shot of a flame-producing foe in the new Spider-Noir trailer, the 1930’s version of Molten Man may have been watered down to a degree.
That being said, it still looks as though the foe will have some impressive pyrotechnic abilities, and context clues from the trailer tease that he might have been hired to go after Silvermane himself. Keeping that in mind, it definitely supports the idea that Spider-Noir will be caught in a large web of conspiracy, perhaps even a gang war in New York.
2
Electro
In the Spider-Noir comics, Max Dillon’s Electro was a former paparazzi who eventually used special equipment and a backpack generator to wield electrical attacks on his victims.
However, the brief shot in the Spider-Noir trailer teasing Electro suggests a more classic version with the ability to conduct and generate electricity from his own body. Seeing as how the 1930s saw massive expansion with electrical infrastructures, one could imagine that a live-action Electro Noir could do some major damage.
1
Silvermane
Also known as Silvio Manfredi in the original Marvel Comics, Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson) is at the top of the threat hierarchy for the upcoming Spider-Noir series, confirmed to be a paranoid crime boss with deep pockets and deeper connections to Ben Reilly’s past as Spider-Noir.
In the main Marvel Universe, Silvermane was a major crime boss with The Maggia, eventually becoming a powerful cyborg in an attempt to extend his life. While the cyborg evolution probably won’t be featured in Spider-Noir, it’s a solid bet that Silvermane will be at the center of Reilly’s investigation and by far the most dangerous.
Having plenty of resources and men likely at his disposal, it should be pretty exciting to see Spider-Noir clashing with this key Marvel villain who’s been seen in live-action before.
In a grounded, pulp-inspired setting like Spider-Noir, systemic and citywide corruption is arguably more dangerous than any single superpowered foe. Although this is just an initial ranking for the villains we know abotu thus far for Spider-Noir, it’ll be fascinating to see how well this ranking holds after the series starts streaming later this year.
