AppleTV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 isn’t the only major Godzilla event happening this 2026. Over the last decade or so, the King of the Monsters has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in mainstream media, starring in multiple installments of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One, as well as making a variety of guest appearances, including Fortnite.
Godzilla and his universe of monsters aren’t slowing down anytime soon. Legendary’s MonsterVerse has only increased in scope with multiple Godzilla x Kong crossover movies, and the franchise continues to expand with the release of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, which focuses on the human side of the Titans’ rise on Earth.
Ahead of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2’s release on February 27, IDW Entertainment officially announces a new crossover starring Gojira and a few iconic video game stars.
Godzilla Meets Sonic The Hedgehog In New IDW Comic Crossover

Releasing this Summer, IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla features SEGA’s Blue Bur and Toho’s King of the Monsters in a clash of unprecedented scale. Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla brings together Godzilla Rivals writer Nick Marino with Sonic the Hedgehog comic artists Jack Lawrence and Reggie Graham, who keep the characters’ original artstyle intact. As two of IDW’s most beloved properties, it was only a matter of time until Sonic and Godzilla crossed paths.
Covers by Mauro Fonseca, Min Ho Kim, Clayton Crain, and Mico Suayan confirm that Knuckles, Amy, Tails, MechaGodzilla, and Mothra will co-star in Sonic and Godzilla’s crossover. Likewise, writer Nick Marino has confirmed that Doctor Eggman will also appear, possibly as an antagonist to both titular characters. Fans can expect easter eggs and references to all eras of Godzilla lore and all popular Sonic installments.

IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla may sound like a wild concept, but Godzilla has amassed an impressive list of similar crossovers. Decades after his first venture into the Marvel Universe in the late ’70s, Gojira defeats virtually every Marvel hero and villain in the incredibly action-packed Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe, followed by his immediate return in Godzilla: Infinity Roar. Likewise, Gojira is accompanied by Kong and other kaijus in Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 1 & 2, where he has a slightly less destructive role.

Comics, 2022’s Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers brings together two pop culture giants as the Rangers follow Rita Repulsa to Godzilla’s reality and fight him with the Dinozords. In 2025, IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla presents a reality where the Foot Clan is created to fend off Godzilla, and the mutant heroes have to stop Shredder from weaponizing the kaiju’s radioactive power. After Sonic, there are few major pop culture icons Godzilla is left to meet.
Sonic also has a soft spot for crossovers. Besides his hobby of teaming up with other video game characters in titles like Super Smash Bros., Sonic has had his own comic adventure in the DC Universe. In 2025, DC x Sonic the Hedgehog saw the Blue Blur team up with the Justice League to fight Darkseid. And this year, parallel to his encounter with Godzilla, Sonic and friends are set to reunite with the Justice League in DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion.
