The Boys is gearing up for Season 5, which will be the final season of the hit Amazon Prime Video series, and fans are excited to find out how the story ends. Thankfully, creator Eric Kripke has already confirmed that it will be nothing short of epic. There are several exciting plotlines, villains to take down, and political strife in a country divided between the Starlighters and the Homelanders.
I expect the show will end with the “good guys” winning, at least in some regard. However, Homelander (Antony Starr) can’t die for one specific reason: he needs to appear on the spin-off Gen V.
‘Gen V’ and ‘The Boys’ Are Connected, and the Spin-off Needs Homelander
The Boys and its spin-off series Gen V, which premiered in 2023, four years after the original series launched on Amazon Prime Video, exist in the same world and follow the same timeline. While Gen V hasn’t officially been renewed for Season 3, it would be a surprise if it wasn’t. Critics and fans alike love the compelling story following young Supes in training at Godolkin University. It’s possible that Prime isn’t announcing an official renewal because of how closely Gen V‘s plot connects to The Boys Season 5. Maybe we’ll hear that Gen V is returning shortly after The Boys series finale becomes available on streaming.
Gen V Season 2 features compelling appearances from Starlight (Erin Moriarty) at the beginning and end with a storyline about the Odessa Project. It wouldn’t make sense if the revolt didn’t play into The Boys Season 5 and heavily involve Homelander, too. So, while The Boys could end with Homelander’s defeat, it wouldn’t be logical to kill him off if Gen V is goign to continue.
Of course, the characters could face other villains, including Homelander’s father, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), Sage (Susan Heyward), or a new one who hasn’t yet been introduced. However, Gen V would be missing something without Homelander. Even though he only had a short cameo in Gen V Season 1 and didn’t even appear in Season 2, we can feel his menacing presence even when he isn’t onscreen.
Now that Homelander is controlling President Calhoun (David Andrews), we have no idea what he’s going to do next. But we’ll certainly find out in The Boys Season 5, which Kripke described as a massive bloodbath with a high body count. Homelander will likely contribute to that high body count. With Butcher now possessing Supe powers and on the warpath to take down as many Supes as he can, he could become a major antagonist worthy of wreaking just as much, if not more, havoc as well.
Why Homelander Needs to Be Part of ‘Gen V’
Homelander is such a captivating villain that he needs to survive for Gen V to make sense. If the characters achieve every goal by the series finale of The Boys, that could spell the end of the popular spin-off. Considering how popular the show is, that would be a bad decision. After all, Gen V Season 1 has a 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and Season 2 has 91%.
If Gen V ended, we would still have the other planned spin-off, Vought Rising, the prequel series following the early lives of Soldier Boy and Homefront (Aya Cash). But, there’s no room for Homelander here, as it’s set in the 1950s and, therefore, takes place before he was even born. Much like Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: Resurrection, The Boys has two very different spinoffs, and the fascinating world has room for both.
Gen V offers a unique perspective as both a satirical superhero series and an unconventional coming-of-age story. It touches on the same political points as The Boys but presents them through the lens of a new generation fighting back against oppression, manipulation, and disinformation. With Homelander leading the charge as a Supe just like them, but using his power and influence to spread lies and hate, he’s the formidable villain who can influence young and impressionable minds. Although vulnerable and naïve characters see him as a hero, he’s anything but.
What we do know, or can at least guess, is that many characters from Gen V will crossover to The Boys Season 5, and hopefully, that isn’t the last that we see of them. The only Gen V character definitively confirmed to appear (via a teaser shown at San Diego Comic Con) is London Thor, who plays Jordan Li. We can expect to see some other familiar faces. A formidable team facing Homelander (Kripke confirming mass destruction) doesn’t bode well for the milk-guzzling Supe and, by proxy, Gen V. If Marie and her group achieve what they want to, what is left for them to do on their own show?
‘The Boys’ Season 5 Will be a Bloodbath
Eric Kripke has noted that he planned the ending of The Boys, one of the most anticipated superhero shows of 2026, in advance. He always intended the story to last for five seasons. He also called The Boys Season 5 the “show’s version of an apocalypse,” which suggests that at least some main characters will die.
Yes, Gen V could exist if Homelander dies. His death could work well for Gen V season 3 if the show suggests there’s a passing of the torch. The kids defeat the baddest Supe to ever exist, Marie takes over as the most powerful Supe on Earth, and they fight new villains as the new Seven. But do we really want a story with a morally sound Supe? Isn’t the allure of the show that the current Seven, led by Homelander, are all corrupt in their own ways? What’s more, tying things so closely to Gen V may confuse fans who haven’t seen the spin-off.
As awful as he is, die-hard fans of The Boys love Homelander. If the world of The Boys continues to exist through Gen V, it would be odd if he was gone. Maybe his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) could take over, but it would be tough for him to live up to his father’s terrifying presence and deeply insecure need to be loved. Those personality traits make Homelander wonderfully unhinged and evil. We’d even take Homelander in a cryochamber like his father. Fans would rather think that Homelander could come back at some point than see him gone forever.
Whatever happens with Homelander in The Boys, it will inform Gen V Season 3, if there is one. Even though The Boys is coming to an end, it shouldn’t end the entire universe. Yes, the finale needs to wrap up the story nicely. However, fans want to see the story continue in Gen V, and hopefully Homelander will be there, too.
