As the award season of this year nears its conclusion with the upcoming Oscars and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein remains one of the favorites to land a few awards, fans of the director should be checking out his most important past creations. Movies like The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth are unique pieces following the storyteller’s eccentric style, while others like Nightmare Alley and The Shape of Water emerged as bold experiments in the Hollywood system. Del Toro has also left an imprint on the world of television, with Tales of Arcadia and The Strain standing as his most popular productions. Also part of his deal with Netflix – he has made Pinocchio and Frankenstein with the streamer – the anthology miniseries is a perfect option for those wanting to dig deeper into his style, but would like to stay within the confines of television. Featuring several subgenres and their respective auteurs, Cabinet of Curiosities is an astounding show that sees the director introducing eight dark and spooky Gothic horror stories that will make some lose sleep. In the land of TV anthologies, the Netflix series is arguably one of the best in the 21st century.
Elegant, Weird, Horrific: ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ Delivers Terror for Everyone
Inspired by Rod Serling’s horror series Night Gallery, del Toro digs into every corner of the horror spectrum and delivers something for everyone. The Oscar-winning director introduces each story by literally opening a cabinet and extracting an artifact from the episode to come. From a classic ghost story to body horror, there are no limits to what del Toro explores in the series, which features big Hollywood names like Rupert Grint, Dan Stevens, Peter Weller, and Crispin Glover, among many others.
Curiously, while the director’s films have been very popular among genre fans, Netflix has not shown any intention of making Season 2 of the anthology miniseries. Del Toro, on the other hand, is keeping himself busy with the production of his stop-motion adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant. He’s also writing the screenplay for Fury, his “very cruel, very violent” project, which will reunite him with Frankenstein‘s Oscar Isaac.
The Top Voices in Modern Horror Gather in Del Toro’s Twisted Vision
Although he presents every episode in the anthology, not every story comes from his twisted mind. Del Toro lends his name, co-writes one of the episodes, and two of his own written short stories form the basis for a couple of episodes. But aside from that, he only works as a creative supervisor for a series that heavily features the tone he’s known for. Del Toro handpicked eight brilliant storytellers to direct each of the episodes, but also gave them enough freedom to tell the stories in their own style without much intervention.
Standouts include Panos Cosmatos, of Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy fame, who delivers the series’ most unique and outlandish episode, “The Viewing.” Jennifer Kent, director of The Babadook, tells a beautiful story called “The Murmuring,” which features Essie Davis and Andrew Lincoln as the leads. Director Guillermo Navarro, the Oscar-winning cinematographer of Pan’s Labyrinth, opens the series with “Lot 36,” an episode that has the del Toro look and feel you may be seeking in Cabinet of Curiosities. F. Murray Abraham stars in “The Autopsy,” the scariest entry of the anthology directed by David Prior (The Empty Man) and written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy).
