The ongoing campaign has been a difficult one for Marc Casado at Barcelona. Having made his proper first-team breakthrough last season, the midfielder has fallen down the pecking order under Hansi Flick this time around.
Competition for places is intense in the Blaugrana midfield, with Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Marc Bernal, and even Dani Olmo seemingly ahead of the 22-year-old La Masia graduate.
It has given way to a lot of speculation over his future, and his recent substitution in the first half in the loss to Atletico Madrid did not help matters.
Barcelona want to extend Casado’s contract
However, according to SPORT, Barcelona’s intention is to renew Casado’s contract before the end of the ongoing campaign.
While this is the roadmap laid out, there is no urgency to reach an immediate agreement, with his current contract running until the summer of 2028.
The length of the new deal and the financial terms still need to be defined, but initial contacts between both parties have already taken place. Negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
However, the report further adds that it is also not ruled out that Casado could reassess his future at Barcelona if he does not gain the prominence he seeks.
Atletico Madrid tried to poach Casado
Should that come to be, there is unlikely to be a shortage of suitors for the La Masia midfielder.
Several clubs showed interest in his signing last summer, but the midfielder was clear that his priority was to remain in Barcelona.
During the winter window, Atletico Madrid made an approach to sign him, but the player’s response was consistent with what he had expressed months earlier. His focus remains on Barça.
Casado’s attitude has not changed despite his lack of minutes. His commitment and professionalism in training continue to be appreciated within the club. He remains patient and composed, knowing the competition in his position.
At present, no final decision has been made regarding Casado’s future. The midfielder remains committed to succeeding at Barcelona, but if his participation does not increase before the end of the season, he could reassess the situation.
Barça, though, wish to renew his contract, which currently expires in 2028.
