Although Mobland season 1 would be hard to top, early reports prove that the show’s 2026 return will make the crime drama even better. Speaking to Hello magazine about the recent Netflix hit How To Get To Heaven From Belfast, series star Emmet Scanlan was asked about his role in the upcoming Mobland season 2.
Scanlan said the Paramount+ show’s second outing would be like the original series “On steroids,” promising plenty more unpredictable twists from the fast-paced mob drama. Scanlan played the part of Paul O’Donnell, Conrad Harrigan’s head of security, in season 1, and will reprise this role in the upcoming season 2.
What Is MobLand About?
Premiering in March 2025, Mobland saw Pierce Brosnan’s aging gangster Conrad Harrigan hire Tom Hardy’s streetwise criminal “Fixer” Harry Da Souza after becoming embroiled in a bloody feud with a rival gangland family, the Stevensons. Helen Mirren and Paddy Considine rounded out the cast of season 1 as Maeve and Kevin Harrigan, respectively.
While Mobland’s season 1 ending ensured that the show’s first outing told a solid, self-contained story, there was still room for the series to expand its scope in a second season. With a large cast that included Scanlan, Luke Mably, Janet McTeer, and Jordi Mollà, the gangster series took a fresh look at an over saturated genre.
How MobLand Season 1 Was Received
Less broadly comedic than producer Guy Ritchie’s recent output but less gritty and grim than many London crime dramas, Mobland was a critical success upon the show’s release. The series broke records for its streaming service, Paramount+, accumulating a staggering 26 million viewers in its first season.
The show’s acclaim from reviewers was more modest, with a critical rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Surprisingly enough, the first season earned only a 66% rating from audiences, meaning Mobland season 2 may have a hard time winning over viewers who were let down by its first outing.
Fortunately, season 2 of the series can be a stronger affair now that the show’s requisite world-building is out of the way. Like many crime dramas, Mobland’s story has a lot of moving parts, and the show took its time establishing its criminal underworld setting. While it was interesting to see the Harrigan family at work, this took up valuable screen time.
MobLand Season 2 Can Be Even Better
Now that the formalities are out of the way and viewers have gotten to know the Harrigan family, Mobland season 2 can afford to have more fun with Tom Hardy’s crime drama protagonist Harry and the rest of the show’s world. While season 1 was imperfect, many of the show’s issues were teething pains that could be overcome by a second outing.
It remains to be seen whether Mobland season 2 can recapture the massive audience that the Paramount+ series earned its first time around. However, the promises that Scanlan made in his Hello magazine interview bode well for Mobland’s season 2 return, and prove that the gangster drama’s best stories may not have even begun yet.
