Manchester United’s latest stance on permanently hiring Michael Carrick has been revealed as the club’s hunt for a new head coach goes on.
Carrick’s fantastic start
Having been brought in in December to serve as a temporary replacement for the sacked Ruben Amorim, Carrick is enjoying a dream start to life as caretaker boss.
He has taken charge of five Premier League games, winning four of them and drawing one. This run includes victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Carrick only failed to clinch three points against West Ham, who sat in a low block for large sections of proceedings at the London Stadium.
In a remarkably short period, Carrick has implemented an attractive, proactive brand of football that has galvanised the fanbase. Most of the struggles that marked Amorim’s turbulent spell have been resolved and United look almost completely different.
Yet, for all the positives, there is little to suggest Carrick is viewed as the clear frontrunner for the permanent role. In fact, club legends like Gary Neville and Roy Keane have argued that Carrick should not be considered for the position. Others such as Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand have insisted that Carrick should be in the running if he maintains the current trajectory of performances and results.
According to The Telegraph, United are being careful not to make a knee-jerk decision, hence why they will still conduct a thorough process of identifying their next permanent manager.
Managerial hunt update
The Telegraph say, “Manchester United will undergo a full recruitment process for their next manager and consider all available options, despite Michael Carrick’s stunning start in the job putting him in the frame for the role.”
“It is understood that United want to take their time to get their next appointment right, with sources expecting the process to be methodical and time-consuming, rather than making a knee-jerk reaction to results.”
Mike McGrath notes that Carrick “is likely” to be in the process but others will also come into the picture as time goes by.
On the appointment process, United will compile a shortlist of candidates once they have determined suitability and assessed availability. Multiple rounds of interviews will then follow before the managers are invited to make a presentation on their coaching style, philosophy and assessment of the squad and what is needed in the transfer market.
Chief executive Omar Berrada, director of football Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell will then settle on who is the best man for the job.
Finally, they will report to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who will make the final decision.
