Coventry City boosted itself back to the summit of the EFL Championship table on Monday night thanks to Haji Wright’s memorable performance.
Wright registered a hat trick on Monday night as the Sky Blues downed Middlesbrough 3-1 in a top-two league clash. The result also capped off a season sweep for Coventry City against its promotion challengers this season.
Wright propelled Coventry City in front after 21 minutes, slotting home Jack Rudoni’s low cross into the back of the net. It marked Wright’s third goal of 2026 and his 11th of the EFL Championship season.
Wright would double his tally and the Sky Blues’ lead in the 55th minute after slotting home a left-footed finish. Carl Rushworth’s goal kick went flying upfield allowing Wright to race onto it and drill a shot into the bottom-right corner.
It marked Wright’s third league brace of the campaign and his first since October 1.
Riley McGree pulled one goal back for Middlesbrough after the hour mark but Wright would put the visitors out of reach four minutes later. Matt Targett’s handball in the box allowed Wright the opportunity to step up and score from the penalty spot to ice the home victory.
Wright’s hat trick was his first at club level since March 15, 2015 against Sunderland.
The result moved the Sky Blues up to 62 points on the season, one point ahead of Middlesbrough in the race for automatic promotion.
Fellow American Aidan Morris played 90 minutes in the loss for Kim Hellberg’s squad.
Coventry City will next travel to West Bromwich Albion on February 21 while Middlesbrough hosts Oxford United on the same day.
