The latest film from Martin McDonagh, the director of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, has landed a fall release date, just in time for award season. Wild Horse Nine is set for release on Nov. 6, 2026, according to Deadline. Searchlight Pictures will distribute the film, with McDonagh serving as both the film’s writer and director.
Wild Horse Nine follows two CIA agents in 1973 who undertake a trust-testing journey across Chile from Santiago to Easter Island. The film will star John Malkovich (Burn After Reading), Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs), Mariana di Girolamo (Ema), Ailín Salas (The Black Frost), Tom Waits (Bram Stoker’s Dracula), and Parker Posey (Beau is Afraid). Filming took place from March to April 2025.
Martin McDonagh Re-Enters the Awards Race
Currently, Wild Horse Nine is set to open opposite Warner Bros. Pictures The Cat in the Hat, Columbia Pictures Archangel, Burns and Company’s Jimmy Stewart biopic Jimmy, and Toho’s Godzilla: Minus Zero. Releasing the first week of November puts Wild Horse Nine right into the award season race. McDonagh’s two previous collaborations with Searchlight Pictures, 2022’s The Banshees of Inisherin and 2017’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, were both nominated for Best Picture in their respective years.
Searchlight Pictures 2026 slate is beginning to take shape. On February 27, Andrew Stanton’s sci-fi film In the Blink of an Eye will debut on Hulu. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is set to open in theaters on March 20. Super Troopers 3, from Broken Lizard, has a summer release date of August 7. Searchlight Pictures and the higher-ups at Disney likely hope that Wild Horse Nine will follow in the footsteps of past Searchlight films like Poor Things and A Complete Unknown and become their big award-season film. It could make up for their 2025 films, like Is This Thing On?, The Testament of Ann Lee and Rental Family being excluded from the 98th Academy Awards.
It is suspected that Wild Horse Nine will premiere during the festival season, in keeping with McDonagh’s past films. In Bruges debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, while Seven Psychopaths had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Both Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin debuted at the Venice Film Festival in 2017 and 2022, respectively. The 2026 Venice Film Festival will be held from Sept. 2 to 12, a good chance for Wild Horse Nine to build award-season buzz before its November theatrical release.
