‘Fatal Attraction’ Is An 8-Part Erotic Thriller Series Perfect For a Binge

If you want a one-night binge-watch, check out the erotic thriller miniseries Fatal Attraction. An adaptation of the short film Diversion, the classic movie Fatal Attraction was released in 1987 and told the memorable story of Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) and Dan Gallagher’s (Michael Douglas) affair. The 2023 series premiered on Paramount+ in April 2023 and brought viewers a similar story, although with some differences that arguably make it a lot stronger.

While Paramount+ has been famous as the streaming platform of several popular Taylor Sheridan series, including Yellowstone spin-offs 1883 and The Dutton Ranch, it’s also the home of Sheridan’s crime thriller Mayor of Kingstown. It might not be the first platform we think of when searching for a thriller. However, while Netflix brought us the steamy series The Hunting Wives and three seasons of Tell Me Lies are streaming on Hulu, thriller fans should watch Fatal Attraction, too.

‘Fatal Attraction’ Is A Perfect Steamy (and Smart) One-Night Binge-Watch

Fatal Attraction is a great series to binge in just one night since it’s only eight episodes. It has plot twists, compelling characters, and tells the classic, intense, and dark story of Alex Forrest’s (Lizzy Caplan) obsession with Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson). This time, Dan is in charge of the Major Crimes Bureau, and also a deputy district attorney in L.A., and Amanda Peet plays his wife, Beth. While Ellen is a child in the 1980s movie, she’s a college student this time around, played perfectly by Alyssa Jirrels.

There are a lot of sex scenes in the TV series, especially near the start of the story. However, like the best erotic thriller movies like Body Heat, a lot happens outside of the bedroom, too. And while viewers won’t be able to look away from the steamy moments, the show doesn’t shy away from significant themes and serious discussions. Rather than just following Dan and Alex’s time together, storylines cover two time periods, including a brutal crime and what happened after.

Let’s ask the big question: is the Fatal Attraction TV series better than the classic movie? It’s a tough question that might depend on who you ask. No offense to the original, because it’s beloved for many reasons, but the new version does have a more complicated and reasonable portrayal of mental health. In the 1987 movie, Glenn Close’s character plays into the “insane” character trope that is seen in far too many thrillers and horror movies. This time, Lizzy Caplan’s Alex’s arc is treated with a bit more respect. When you watch the original, you’re supposed to like Dan and think Alex is “nuts.” Now, you can watch both of these characters and empathize with their emotional experiences. Over the past few decades, many have talked about Alex’s character arc, and Close has shared her opinions about it, too.

Although it’s not a sweet love story or a happy-go-lucky tale, Fatal Attraction asks what love really means, and gives us a lot to think about. It’s not easy to make a TV adaptation of a classic film and have everyone jump on board. There are more than a few TV shows based on movies that we don’t discuss. Therefore, it’s not a huge surprise that Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction only had one season, and it also didn’t get incredible reviews. Some take issue with the ending. However, it’s possible to be impressed that the writers switched up the movie’s conclusion and attempted something new. There’s also a great twist that adds a new layer to the story, and it’s worth watching to get to that moment. So, if you want a quick eight-episode binge over two evenings, Fatal Attraction is hot, exciting, smart, and thoughtful.
