One of Liam Neeson’s most underwatched thrillers has made an unexpected comeback on Netflix. What’s more, he actually gets to use his Irish accent, and it makes sense within the movie! It wouldn’t be a stretch to call Liam Neeson one of the most iconic action stars working today. The Irish star has appeared in everything from Kingdom of Heaven to Batman Begins, Taken, The A-Team remake, The Grey, and the Star Wars prequels. But, amidst that impressive filmography, there’s room for some hidden gems to get lost amongst the crowd. That’s exactly what happened to In the Land of Saints and Sinners. Three years after it was first released, the movie is finally getting the attention it deserves.
In the Land of Saints and Sinners is currently streaming on Netflix. Seemingly out of nowhere, the film has shot up Netflix’s streaming chart. At the time of writing, In the Land of Saints and Sinners is the fourth most popular movie on Netflix this week, earning over 5 million views. The film has spent two weeks in the Top 10 and is also the number one movie in over 20 countries. However, in the US, the number one spot is currently held by the true crime doc, The Investigation of Lucy Letby.
If you’ve never heard of In the Land of Saints and Sinners, we’ll forgive you (this time around). On the surface, it’s another of Neeson’s one-man army, tough-guy movies. As such, the film was buried beneath the likes of Taken and Non-Stop in the actor’s filmography. However, as well as being one of the actor’s few movies set in Ireland, In the Land of Saints and Sinners is actually one of Neeson’s best, which more people need to watch, especially now that it’s trending on Netflix.
‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’ Is a Genuinely Moving Thriller
Again, In the Land of Saints and Sinners is more than just another Taken/A Walk Among the Tombstones rip-off. Director Robert Lorenz grounds the movie through its rural Irish setting. Meanwhile, Neeson and his co-stars, Kerry Condon, Ciarán Hinds, Colm Meaney, and Jack Gleeson, all deliver incredible performances. Audiences and critics agree, as the movie holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 74% user score.
However, the movie was far from the box office success that Neeson is used to. In the Land of Saints and Sinners only received a limited theatrical release before being dropped on Netflix. During that brief window in a handful of theaters, the movie grossed just over $3 million worldwide.
Set in the 1970s, the plot follows Neeson as Finbar Murphy, a killer with ties to the IRA who tries to settle down in a remote coastal town. However, when a terrorist cell arrives, forcing Finbar out of his quiet life, he’s forced to reconcile with his past actions to either protect himself or his new friends and neighbors.
Liam Neeson Has Retired (Kind Of)
If you watch In the Land of Saints and Sinners and think, ‘Wow, I sure hope Liam Neeson does more movies like this,’ then we’ve got some bad news for you. Every actor who’s later in their life discusses retiring eventually. Harrison Ford is the latest actor to reveal the sell-by date for his career. But Liam Neeson’s newfound retirement comes with a caveat.
Liam Neeson has officially retired from acting… in action movies. The aging star has said that the physical demands of the genre have proven too much in recent years. However, that hasn’t stopped Neeson from starring in action-adjacent movies, like 2025’s The Naked Gun reboot.
