Newcastle interested in Carlos Augusto – Report

Italy has been a happy hunting ground for Newcastle United in recent years, with Sandro Tonali and Malick Thiaw both arriving from Milan before excelling on Tyneside.

Fans have been clamouring for the club to sign players from the continent for multiple windows now: one only has to look at the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman to further justify that desire.

And after a very quiet winter transfer window, there is an expectation that Newcastle will invest heavily this summer, not only adding quality in key areas but also improving our squad depth.

This brings us nicely to a fresh report linking Newcastle to a versatile Serie A star who could help bolster Eddie Howe’s squad in more than one position.

According to Italian outlet L’Interista, Newcastle are showing interest in a summer move for versatile Inter Milan defender Carlos Augusto.

The 27-year-old was previously linked with a move in 2023 when he was at Monza, and would be valued for his versatility across the back line, where he can operate as a left back, wing back, and at centre back.

Though only a squad player under Cristian Chivu at Inter Milan, he’s thought to be valued at around €30m with his current contract set to expire in 2028.

L’Interista’s report also highlights the interest of Aston Villa in also signing the Brazilian defender, but plays down the likelihood of Unai Emery’s side proceeding with signing him as they already have Ian Maatsen and Lucas Digne on the books.

Augusto could be another player we find ourselves fiercely competing with Villa to try and sign this summer to bolster our respective defences: last month it was reported that we were both linked with a move for the Spanish defender Oscar Mingueza, who boasts similar qualities to Augusto.

The recent spate of injuries we’ve endured, particularly in defence, highlights just how many more names we need on the books for sufficient enough depth.

Each of Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth are injured, Jamaal Lascelles has departed for Leicester, and Dan Burn has only just returned from a long injury spell of his own, with Lewis Hall also having his fair share of issues in 2025.

€30m may seem pricey for someone in his late 20s who won’t be a guaranteed starter, but fans will rightfully highlight that we simply cannot go into another campaign wanting to compete in three to four different competitions with how shallow our defensive depth is.

Another one to watch this summer? Let’s wait and see, but he certainly ticks a few boxes if the price was right.
