Sophie Turner’s New Crime Thriller ‘Steal’ Finds Success on Prime Video

Sophie Turner might be the talk of the town right now thanks to Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series that sees her take on the iconic role of Lara Croft, but don’t sleep on Turner’s new crime thriller that’s currently a streaming hit. Released on Jan. 21, Steal is the second most popular series on Prime Video at the moment, bested only by another of their streaming originals, Fallout.

Starring Turner as Zara Dunne, a trade processor at a financial management company, Steal centers on a major heist that sees a gang of thugs force her and her best friend to transfer £4 billion in pension funds into anonymous accounts. However, this is no ordinary robbery, and Dunne soon finds herself caught between the criminals, MI5, and the police as she tries to navigate the massive fallout from her actions.

With Steal being the hit it is for Prime Video, all eyes will continue to be on Turner as she turns her attention to portraying the legendary protagonist of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft. Developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the new series is currently in production in London, and is expected to release in 2027. Thus far, Turner has been earning high marks for how much she looks like Croft, but when it comes to embodying the famed adventurer, the star believes it’s about more than appearances.

“It’s about her and her story and what drives her, rather than what so many people also love about her, which is how hot she is in the games and the movies,” she told the Los Angeles Times recently, adding, “I really want to show the other side. She’s so unashamedly capable. She is not a woman who hides her strengths at all.”

‘Steal’ Showcases Sophie Turner’s Range as an Actress

Created by Sotiris Nikias, Steal features Turner really getting to stretch her wings as an actress. While most fans know her from her portrayal of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, the British crime thriller gives everyone a chance to see a new side of the star. Her performance as a hungover office worker is certainly a marked departure from her days on the hit HBO series, and carries Steal to success by showcasing her emotional range.

Critics think so, too, as they’ve propelled Steal to a Certified Fresh rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many highlighting Turner as the standout in their reviews. Called a “career-topping performance” by Andrew Murray of The Upcoming, Martin Carr from CBR adds:

“Sophie Turner does nothing but swing for the fences. Not in an obvious grandstanding way, but through a combination of careful choices unpacked across 6 episodes. With the story resting on her shoulders, and Tomb Raider on the horizon, this is a moment when she needs to step up. There are so many ways in which Zara could have felt petulant, entitled, or worse still, unsympathetic, but Sophie Turner is full of surprises.”
