Christopher Walken’s $237M Fantasy Movie Fast-Forwards Its Way To Global Streaming Success 20 Years Later

A 2006 fantasy comedy movie starring Christopher Walken that made $237.7 million at the worldwide box office is now a global streaming hit.

Christopher Walken’s movies and shows cover a wide range of genres, from the war drama of The Deer Hunter to the superhero campiness in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. He won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for The Deer Hunter and received a nomination in the same category for Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can. Now, Walken’s movie Click is in the eighth spot on HBO Max’s global top 10 streaming charts, where it is behind M3GAN 2.0, Death of a Unicorn, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Woman of the Hour, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Migration, and The Departed, and is ahead of Sunshine and the Best Picture nominee Sinners. Click is in the top 10 for 20 different countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, but it is not available to watch on HBO Max in the US.

In the 2006 film, Walken plays a mysterious individual named Morty, who gives Adam Sandler’s character, Michael Newman, a universal remote when he goes to Bed, Bath & Beyond. The fantastical remote gives Michael the power to rewind, pause, and fast-forward through his life. At first, the remote seems to be exactly what Michael needs, but it quickly backfires, as it begins fast-forwarding through his entire life, which brings devastating consequences. Click‘s cast also features Kate Beckinsale, Henry Winkler, David Hasselhoff, and Sean Astin. It was directed by Frank Coraci and written by Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe, with a script based on the folk tale “The Magic Thread.”

While it is not always regarded as one of Adam Sandler’s best movies, Click was a box office hit that grossed $237.7 million worldwide on a reported budget of $82.5 million. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a “Rotten” critics’ score of 34% but a “Fresh” audience score of 66%. The widespread appeal that led to box office success and a largely positive audience reception appears to have endured 20 years later based on the global streaming numbers.

Walken and Sandler are both prolific actors, but Click is the only time they have collaborated together on a project. For decades, Walken has proven that he can excel in a variety of genres, but it has only been in more recent years that the comedic Sandler has gained more recognition for his abilities as a dramatic actor, with his performances in Uncut Gems and Jay Kelly receiving critical acclaim.
