‘The Strangers – Chapter 3’ Star Madelaine Petsch Opens Up About That Shocking Ending of the Trilogy

WARNING: Spoilers below for ‘The Strangers – Chapter 3′An ending years in the making, this weekend saw the release of The Strangers – Chapter 3, which brought this ambitious reboot trilogy to its end. Over the course of this trilogy, much like in the previous two films, audiences witnessed masked murderers stalk and torment victims, and what made this recent series of films so different is that we saw Madelaine Petch’s Maya be tormented over an extended period of time, engaging in a bizarre push and pull with her assailants. Throughout Chapter 3, Gabriel Basso’s character forced Maya to witness the brutality he was capable of delivering, seemingly in hopes of convincing her to join him in the mayhem.

By the film’s finale, Maya did ultimately embrace her darker side; however, rather than focusing her anger on unsuspecting victims, she killed off those who had stalked her. While speaking with MovieWeb, Petsch explained how, even with this experience behind her, Maya will likely never be the same again:

“I think when she’s been pushed the way that she’s been pushed … this person saw a level of darkness in her the first time he saw her. When that ax goes to the door and ‘Knights of White Satin’ plays, re-watching all three of them together, which I just did, you can tell he sees something in her that … if he wanted to kill her, he could have killed her a million times over, but he’s chosen not to because he is grooming her into trying to become one of them.

“When someone’s doing that to you for that long, it would take a truly insane person to be able to come back from that. I believe that Maya is no longer Maya. She is a shell of herself and what she does next could easily be what they were doing.”

Petsch’s Time in Horror Isn’t Over

Based on the actor’s comments, it could be implied that a future film in the franchise might explore Maya’s warpath in the wake of this experience, though there’s no confirmed reports on whether we could ever get a sequel to these films. Given that all three were shot during an extended production period, she is likely taking some time away from the series to recuperate, but even if she won’t be returning to Strangers anytime soon, she also confirmed she’s got another horror project in mind.

“There is one film from the ’70s that I really want to remake, but I’m in the process of figuring that out. So I don’t want to say it yet, but I’m really excited about if it happens. It’s so cool. I don’t know how no one’s remade it yet.”

With a number of iconic horror movies from the ’70s already having been revived over the years, from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to The Exorcist, it’s anyone’s guess what title Petsch could be talking about. Deeper cuts like The Hills Have Eyes, The Crazies, and The Wicker Man have all also earned reboots, with it being possible that Petsch has an entirely off-the-radar title in mind.

What the future of The Strangers is, regardless of Petsch’s involvement might be, is yet to be determined, with Lionsgate likely waiting to see how financially viable this entire trilogy has become before setting any significant plans into motion.
