Jeremy Allen White’s ‘The Iron Claw’ Scores Netflix Streaming Date

Actor Jeremy Allen White has been a busy actor for years, thanks to starring in 10 seasons of Shameless, but his role in FX’s The Bear and the acclaim he earned from that project took his notoriety to new heights. Winning various accolades for the show, including winning both Golden Globe and Emmy Awards for playing Carmine Berzatto, White started earning more sought-after roles on the big screen. In 2023, he brought to life the harrowing and traumatic story of real-life wrestling family the Von Erichs in The Iron Claw, which lands on Netflix on Feb. 19.

Much like he did for his work on The Bear, White earned acclaim for his role in The Iron Claw as Kerry Von Erich, as he starred alongside Zac Efron, Harris Dickinson, Stanley Simons, and Holt McCallany. Starting in the late ’70s and early ’80s, the movie shows patriarch Jack “Fritz” Von Erich as a professional wrestler, inspiring his sons to follow in his footsteps, regardless of their own desires or even their actual skill. As the years go by, the family suffers a number of tragedies, until it’s only one of the four Von Erich brothers who survives their quest for fame in the professional wrestling world.

Critics Raved but Awards Groups Ignored

The harrowing and real journey of this family impressed critics, as The Iron Claw sits at 89% positive on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences being even more impressed, with the film earning a 94% audience score. Written and directed by Sean Durkin, the movie also landed on a number of year-end lists from critics, with the cast and filmmaking on display all earning accolades.

There’s a decades-long precedent of sports biopics securing awards nominations, from Rocky to Raging Bull to Million Dollar Baby to The Blind Side to Moneyball, so a sports biopic that’s well-received by critics has often resulted in awards contention. While The Iron Claw was recognized by a handful of organizations – most notably, the National Board of Review awarded the picture Best Ensemble – it failed to secure any nominations with either the Golden Globe or Academy Awards. Having to go up against awards juggernauts like Oppenheimer and Poor Things didn’t help, so maybe it could have secured more nominations had it been released in a different year.

Another Biopic Came Up Short

As highlighted by the National Board of Review awarding The Iron Claw Best Ensemble, what made the movie work was the dynamic between the entire Von Erich family. In 2025, however, White would get another chance to bring a real-life figure to life, even if the subject’s legacy felt larger than life.

In Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, White starred as Bruce Springsteen during a pivotal moment in his career. While the musician found major success with his album The River and its subsequent tour, Springsteen failed to reckon with how fame was impacting him and whether his perceived success was lessening or exacerbating a number of his own personal struggles. To regain his sense of self, Springsteen retired to an isolated house to write some new material, resulting in his album Nebraska, which was a stark departure for the singer.

From filmmaker Scott Cooper, Deliver Me from Nowhere performed slightly better in awards circuits, with White scoring a nomination for Best Actor – Drama, though it failed to earn any Academy Award nominations.
