The marriage of psychological horror and shooter action gameplay can be jarring if not executed well enough, and yet A.A.U. Black Site seems to be hitting a sweet spot that is as atmospheric and engaging as it is nostalgic. Indeed, 10 years later, A.A.U. Black Site could be a thrilling spiritual successor to Criterion Games and EA’s BLACK, with a hearty helping of Resident Evil’s more action-oriented endeavors.
As per Steam’s store page, Raspberry Studio’s A.A.U. Black Site looks like an acid trip and a half. It’s almost evocative of the same surrealist visuals seen in the Outlast franchise, as well as echoing how Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival may take shape, only with an arsenal of guns at players’ disposal, which ultimately leans it toward the same vein as Trepang2 or, as mentioned, BLACK.
A.A.U. Black Site Is A Slick New Horror
A.A.U. Black Site’s FPS action gameplay bears a striking resemblance to BLACK, and it may therefore be no mere coincidence that ‘Black’ is in the title. Plus, while BLACK’s protagonist is a US Army special operations soldier combatting terrorists, A.A.U. Black Site’s titular secret special forces operation means players will be armed to the teeth with an inventory that includes “assault rifles, sub-machine guns and pistols.”
Another intriguing element of A.A.U. Black Site is its first-person perspective bodycam footage, in general, as it emulates Outlast’s camcorder horror. This heightens A.A.U. Black Site’s sense of realism and immersion, especially with phenomenal photorealistic graphics—a staple now of modern horror games, and arguably perfectly suited for an FPS shooter. There is an ample amount of horror instilled in the experience as players mow enemies down with military-grade weaponry and bludgeon them with hammers in close-quarters combat.
It Looks A Lot Like BLACK, With A Touch Of Resi
Action and horror go hand-in-hand in the Resident Evil franchise, and it isn’t terribly difficult to imagine how A.A.U. Black Site could have additionally been inspired by the seasoned S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team, let alone the one-many-army U.S.S. Alpha Team leader codenamed HUNK.
A.A.U. Black Site has a free Steam demo available to download, and its current release window of 2026 suggests that it could launch at any time within the next 10 months. A.A.U. Black Site’s blend of horror and gunplay is becoming increasingly popular, and it would appear as if that upward trend will continue if iconic horror franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill also continue to emphasize action/combat.
