The Neagley spinoff is not only an exciting extension of Prime Video’s Reacher but also quietly fixes one of the biggest issues in the parent series.
Given how the Neagley spinoff show is not based on existing books, it is hard not to foresee how it will turn out and impact its parent show. However, considering how Jack Reacher, too, will appear in the spinoff, it bears the responsibility of being as good as the Alan Ritchson series, if not better.
Whether it will live up to these expectations remains to be seen, but it already seems to be on the right path towards making the overarching franchise even better.
Prime Video’s Reacher Has Struggled To Give Neagley’s Characterization More Depth
Maria Sten’s Neagley has appeared in all three Reacher seasons so far. However, in seasons 1 and 3, she has mostly been a convenient plot device. While she had a far more significant role in season 2, the show’s first and third installments portrayed her as a mere plot device for Reacher to call upon whenever he needed off-the-grid intelligence or logistical support. Beyond that, she barely had any significance in the overarching story.
According to the original Reacher books’ lore, Neagley was not even supposed to be in seasons 1 and 3. However, the show retconned aspects from the novels to accommodate her in the story.
This approach worked well in season 1, but her role in season 3 seemed a little too forced and unnecessary. Fortunately, with the upcoming Neagley spin-off, the Prime Video franchise is all set to fix this issue. It will not only give Maria Sten’s character a more significant role in the overarching franchise but also develop aspects of her characterization that were left unexplored in the original books.
The Upcoming Neagley Spinoff Gives Maria Sten’s Character The Spotlight She Deserves
After working more in the shadows for three Reacher seasons and only appearing as Jack Reacher’s backup in seasons 1 and 3, Neagley will finally be in the spotlight in her own spinoff. For the first time, she will not merely swoop in just long enough to help move the plot forward before disappearing again and, instead, have a prominent role to play.
Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher will also appear in the upcoming Neagley spin-off show, but he will be more of a sidekick in Neagley’s crime-solving endeavors.
By primarily focusing on Neagley in the spinoff, the Prime Video franchise will effectively give her characterization more depth and potentially reveal the details of everything from her military past to her aversion to human touch. If done well, even her potential return in Reacher‘s future installments would feel more impactful as viewers would be better aware of her motivations, struggles, and the past experiences that shaped her.
