We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 2 Brentford 3.
Pope 6
Not sure if he could have done more to keep out Brentford’s winner but otherwise had little to do and was authoritative with the long throws and crosses.
Trippier 4
Loose with his passing again and his legs are gone.
He’s capable of maybe 60 minutes before he looks out of his depth.
Thiaw 6
His pace and calmness at the back helped us out on more than one occasion.
One of the few players that can walk away today with any credit.
Botman 5
A lovely header to put us in front but lost too many tussles with Thiago.
Ultimately his weak header under pressure presented Brentford with their winner.
Hall 5
One of his weaker performances.
Wasn’t terrible but after some initial encouraging ventures down the left he didn’t contribute much and gave the ball away needlessly on occasion. Still England’s best left back.
Bruno 6
He’s got a bonus point for dispatching our penalty well but didn’t look as sharp as he has all season.
Delivered some excellent balls into the box from set-pieces.
Tonali 5
Coasted through the game.
Needed more from him today.
Willock 6
I actually thought Willock was one of the more dangerous players in the first half and was a little disappointed to see him taken off.
I was happy to see the tactical shift but felt Willock’s performance was decent enough.
Murphy 4
Everything was just so poor from Murphy today.
I couldn’t fathom why Eddie Howe didn’t start Elanga after his confidence boosting goal midweek. I’ll probably never get the opportunity to know why Murphy played.
Wissa 5
So disappointed with Wissa today.
I’m still a fan of our number 9, I have been for a few seasons now, but other than one nice little interchange to release Elanga and Trippier on a counter attack he wasn’t in the game.
Barnes 5
He had an excellent sight of goal early on but otherwise I felt he well off his best today.
Subs
Elanga 6
I was astounded he didn’t get the start today and he wasn’t helped by coming into the game when Brentford were sat deeper.
His speed on the break and teasing cross earned us the penalty.
Woltemade 5
I knew he’d likely face a spell this season where he struggled in front of goal.
Unfortunately, it’s come at a time where the team as a whole are struggling for fluency and it makes his struggles stand out more.
Osula 5
Some high energy direct running.
He had plenty of effort but little to show for it.
Burn N/A
Not on long enough to rate.
Ramsay N/A
Not on long enough to rate.
