Gerard Butler is back for another action thriller in Empire City, and a new first look at the movie has just been revealed thanks to Deadline. Having recently appeared in the tough-guy sequels Den of Thieves: Pantera and Greenland 2, it is not surprising to see Butler once again brandishing a firearm in his latest role.
In Empire City, when a hostage crisis erupts inside New York’s landmark Clybourn Building, former Navy SEAL turned firefighter Rhett (Butler), his squad, and his NYPD wife Dani (Hayley Atwell) must fight and navigate their way through the building to rescue the captives.
While there is little known about the movie right now, previous casting announcements have revealed that Butler and Atwell will be joined by Mel Jarnson, Tre Hale, Michael Beach, Dominic Bogart, Stephen Murphy, Jack DiFalco, and Den of Thieves star Kaiwi Lyman.
Empire City is directed by South African filmmaker Michael Matthews, who previously helmed Five Fingers for Marseilles and produced the 2024 Jules Verne adventure series, Nautilus, based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The movie is written by Brian Tucker and S. Craig Zahler, with Butler producing alongside Marc Butan, Alan Siegel, and Paul Currie. The film currently has no release date.
Gerard Butler Has Found His Niche as an Action Movie Hero
While Gerard Bulter was once known for playing the big screen version of The Phantom of the Opera and starring in rom-coms like P.S. I Love You, it was his 2004 role in Zack Snyder’s epic 300 that really set him on the road to being a sought-after action star to rival other mature genre icons like Liam Neeson and Jason Statham.
Among his biggest and best movies, Butler has starred in the …Has Fallen franchise with Morgan Freeman, Den of Thieves and Greenland, which have both recently released sequels, and some very popular hits like Plane, The Bounty Hunter, and the war movie, Kandahar.
Last year, Butler went from animation to live-action by reprising his role as Stoick the Vast in Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon remake. He will be back again for the sequel to that hit as well, making his upcoming slate of movies almost as impressive as anything that came before it. He is also expected to return for a third Den of Thieves movie and a fourth movie in his ...Has Fallen franchise, Night Has Fallen, which will once again pair him up with Morgan Freeman, although that film is currently in the very early stages of development.
Last month, Butler’s Greenland 2: Migration ended up falling into the curse of the January box office, receiving mixed reviews and pulling back only $26 million from its theatrical run against a hefty $90 million budget. In a time when lower-budget action movies have been huge successes, while those with big budgets have struggled to turn a profit, many will be hoping that Empire City will be one of the former when it finally arrives in cinemas, probably sometime later in the year.
