When it comes to supernatural horror movies, the formulas and models have been broken and rebuilt countless times. While sometimes a filmmaker arrives with a bold approach to the most popular horror subgenre, most fans believe everything has been done in the land of ghosts and ghouls. However, almost ten years ago, David Lowery made a presentation that would change our perception of ghosts and those who find it impossible to transcend to their proper realm. A Ghost Story sounds like a horror movie, but it is far from that. This unique experience of a film is now available to stream for free on Tubi, and we can’t think of a better option to kickstart your emotions again.
A film that fits seamlessly within A24’s brand, A Ghost Story landed in theaters in the summer of 2017. Starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, the supernatural drama was conceived by Lowery after a personal crisis in which he became attached to a physical space, as he told ComingSoon a few years ago. Adding the layer of a gripping story about a literal ghost and some existential drama, the writer/director came up with the concept behind the most bizarre non-horror ghost movie you will ever see.
‘A Ghost Story’ Is Not Your Average Ghost Movie
A Ghost Story follows C, a musician who perishes in a car accident, leaving M a widow. When she recognizes the body and bids farewell, C comes back. Well, sort of. Covered with a sheet, C wanders and starts chasing M, who goes through the grieving process but eventually decides to rebuild her life alongside someone else. However, C decides to try everything in his power to let M know that he’s still there, and he’s not ready to let go of her. The official synopsis from Letterboxd reads:
Recently deceased, a white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to console his bereft wife, only to find that in his spectral state he has become unstuck in time, forced to watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away.
Though not a scary movie, A Ghost Story tackles the themes often present in horror movies about the floating entities tormenting the living. Nevertheless, Lowery presents a plot that resonates with the viewer from a more meditative and spiritual perspective. For Screen Zealots, critic Louisa Moore writes: “A complex, dreamlike journey through the past, present and future, and one that makes you question your very existence in the enormity of the universe.” Moore’s review is one of many that put the film among Lowery’s highest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes, with 91% on the critics’ score and a Certified Fresh label.
A Poignant Approach to Explaining Why Ghosts Remain
Lowery tells the story following the rules of a slow-burn drama that never gets close to horror territory. Instead of making Rooney Mara’s M the victim of a haunting ghost, the director frames her as a victim of grief who willingly decides to release herself from a gripping memory. On the other side, literally, is C, a ghost who remains because he’s waiting for… something. Ultimately, he finds this, and your mind will be blown.
The third act in A Ghost Story takes a wild, unexpected narrative turn that, yes, will make you question your purpose in life. Lowery’s bizarre ghost drama is unlike anything you have ever seen before, and hopefully, a film that will make you explore your emotions and, why not, make you feel complete. Have tissues at hand, as this one will make you shed a few tears.
