Masters of the Universe is already surpassing expectations by longtime fans, but the latest look at the upcoming fantasy reboot confirms it will embrace the “inherent silliness” of the franchise. Anticipation for the film has ramped up considerably thanks to the well-received trailer that was released earlier this year, which revealed a faithful yet modern interpretation of the material. Now, the creative team behind Masters of the Universe confirms that fans are getting exactly what they have been waiting for.
A new look at Masters of the Universe has arrived after the trailer’s debut last month, revealing Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man wielding the Power Sword, as well as Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn with her powerful staff (courtesy of Empire). In an interview with the publication, director Travis Knight discussed his approach to adapting the fantasy property, based on the early ’80s toy franchise that turned into several now-iconic cartoons. For him, bringing Masters of the Universe to life meant leaning into the more inherently silly qualities, instead of moving away from them in live-action.
“There’s an inherent silliness to it, which we are acknowledging and embracing. I think it’s a virtue, actually. And it’s woven into the script to help some of these things make sense to a modern audience. Like, why would that character have that stupid name? Well, over the course of the movie we show you why.”
