Here is a roundup of the top Liverpool news, gossip and transfer latest from icfootballnews featuring the likes of Jeremy Jacquet, Christophe Dugarry and Adam Wharton that you may have missed….
Gunners icon Paul Merson has opened up and admitted that he is shocked that Jeremy Jacquet refused a move to Chelsea in the January window and instead opted to agree a summer move to Liverpool.
Chelsea had been exploring a bid for Jacquet and appeared to make a significant breakthrough in their move as they agreed personal terms with the 20-year-old earlier in the January transfer window.
Jacquet has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in French football in recent months and was heavily linked with Arsenal last summer, but in the final few days of the transfer window, LIVERPOOL struck a stunning deal for the youngster, worth around worth £55million plus £5m in add-ons, blowing their rivals out of the water.
However, Jacquet will remain with Rennes for the remainder of the campaign before joining up with the reigning Premier League champions until the summer, and Merson has opened up and revealed that he was shocked to see that Jacquet made the move to Liverpool and not Chelsea.
‘Yeah, I found that extraordinary that he’s coming in the summer,’ Paul Merson told Sky Sports
‘They need a centre-half in now to fight for the top four or top five. So yeah, it surprises me. I’m majorly shocked. I don’t know why this kid is staying in France until the start of next season,.
‘If you’re paying that amount of money then you’re going, “We want him now, we want him today!”, and that’s the problem.
‘I don’t know if it’s FFP rules, I don’t know if it is that. If that is the reasoning then I understand.’
Jacquet is a good signing for Liverpool and, as a Chelsea fan, I’m shocked that he hasn’t gone to Chelsea,’ Merson – a lifelong fan of Chelsea – added.
‘I know Chelsea have got a lot of centre-backs but I think there’s a lot that need to come in and out of Chelsea in my opinion. But I am glad Acheampong has stayed but I think he’s going to be a proper, proper player that kid.’

£60 million is alot of money to splash on someone that ha snot really done that much in the game, it is a massive risk from LIVERPOOL to splash this amount of money when they could have got Marc Guehi for just £30 million earlier in the transfer window.
It was a shock to see that Chelsea missed out on Jacquet, but the lad must have felt that he would get more opportunities playing for LIVERPOOL than he would at Stamford Bridge.
SLOT TOLD TO SIGN WHARTON
Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey believes Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson could be the Reds’ answer to N’Golo Kante, who would help the club win another Premier League title.
The 23-year-old Anderson has excelled since leaving Newcastle for the City Ground and is now firmly established as part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans for next summer’s World Cup.
Unsurprisingly, Anderson’s form has alerted a number of leading Premier League clubs with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool, who are all reportedly interested in a deal for the talented midfielder at the end of the season.
Liverpool did not need to make a move during the January window as they did not need to sign anymore midfielders, but there is talk that they could make a move at the end of the season and meet the massive £100 million asking price that Forest have placed on his head.
Heskey has been impressed by Anderson, and he has urged LIVERPOOL to make a move, telling aceodds.com: “From what I’ve seen I like Anderson. I like the fact he can get around the pitch. These pitches are big. I’m nearly 50 and I look at the pitches today and say: ‘I used to run around on that?’
“You’ve got to have someone that can cover ground and the way Liverpool play, they need someone energetic and someone that can cover ground as quickly as possible.
“Everyone is trying to find a Kanté who can get around the pitch. One minute he’s here and then he’s tackling the ball and then he’s running with the ball. That’s one player in Anderson who I think can cover the pitch aggressively.”

It is very easy to see why all the big clubs wants Anderson, he has been so impressive for Forest and a player that could become one of the best in his position, but he needs to make the right career choices.
If the big clubs are circling for a potential deal, then Anderson needs to make sure that LIVERPOOL, Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham have the space in the side for him to play, he doesnt want to move and then sit on the bench you know?
However – saying that, he is ready for that next step and could really get taken to that next level at Liverpool.
LIVERPOOL SUCKERS
France World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry has congratulated Rennes for managing to tempt a ‘sucker’ like Liverpool into spending such a ‘ridiculous’ fee on Jeremy Jacquet after the Reds agreed a fee of £60 million for the defender.
It is a fee that the likes of Chelsea did not want to pay, as the Blues only wanted to pay around the 443 million mark, so after seeing Liverpool agree £60 million for Jacquet, Dugarry has opened up and congratulated Rennes for managing to tempt a ‘sucker’ like Liverpool into spending such a ‘ridiculous’ fee.
He said: ‘This isn’t meant to offend the player, honestly, he’s not to blame at all, and we wish him all the best because he’s a good player. But when you have suckers like that… well done to Rennes
‘Rennes managed to find a sucker like Liverpool that was [willing to pay] €70 million (£60m).’
‘Let them continue, all these English clubs, sending tens of millions of euros,’ the 1998 World Cup champion added.
‘This isn’t just a two-tiered football situation anymore, it’s a football that’s lost its mind.
‘Let’s stop trying to pretend there’s a justification for it. There’s no justification whatsoever. Poor Jacquet, this transfer is going to put a lot of pressure on him,’ he went on.
‘Even him, the poor kid, who is certainly a very good player, is going to arrive with so much pressure. His performances will be viewed differently, even though he doesn’t deserve it.
‘Those of us who know football, let’s not try to justify this amount by saying it’s because LIVERPOOL has money or whatever. It’s meaningless!
Dugarry concluded: ‘I don’t know what’s going on. It’s ridiculous! No, it’s not supply and demand. It’s ridiculous! It’s ridiculous!’
