Pluribus Season 2 Release Tradition Confirmed By Creator Vince Gilligan

Pluribus Season 2 Release Tradition Confirmed By Creator Vince Gilligan

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the Pluribus season 1 finale. The legendary Vince Gilligan updates fans on the work on his newest TV show — and teases when the next season might be released.

Though his comments may not be the most reassuring to audiences hoping for a reasonable hiatus. At the end of 2025, Gilligan debuted Pluribus, a daring new sci-fi series about a signal from space taking over the Earth and turning everyone into a peaceful hive mind. Better Call Saul‘s Rhea Seehorn stars as Carol, a rare immune person, who will return on a new warpath in Pluribus season 2.

Appearing on a panel at Apple TV’s inaugural press day on Tuesday, Gilligan affirmed that season 2 is underway, saying (per The Hollywood Reporter): “We’re plugging away. My writers are plugging away. […] It takes a long time to come up with these episodes. We are deeper into the process at this moment than I would like, considering how few episodes we have figured out. But it takes some time, just as it did the first season.

We appreciate everybody’s patience,” Gilligan continued. “But it ain’t gonna be The Pitt, coming back every year. I wish it would be because it’s an awesome show that’s old-school, like we used to do The X-Files [when] we’d come back the same month every year. It will not be like The Pitt. We’ll come back the same month — just the question is what year.

Thus, Gilligan believes that Pluribus will return as a year-end release, but season 2 coming out in December 2026 is very unlikely. It could drop on Apple TV at the end of 2027 or even 2028 — a long hiatus which is unfortunately common in the streaming era. The Pitt, uniquely for this day and age, had a season premiere in both January 2025 and 2026, with its release schedule taking it up to April.

And Pluribus season 1 ends on a massive cliffhanger. The season finale sees Carol reaching a point of acceptance, believing she can co-exist with The Others so long as her wish to remain separate from them is respected. However, she finds out from Zosia (Karolina Wydra) that they have discovered a loophole and are working to create a version of the virus attuned to her using the eggs she froze before “The Joining.”

So, Carol then follows up on a seed planted earlier in the season and has The Others deliver an atom bomb to her house, where she reunites with Manousos (Carlos Manuel Vesga) to come up with a plan to “save the world.” Hence, no matter how long it takes, there will be a massive audience waiting when Pluribus comes back.

Pluribus proved that Gilligan’s consistent brilliance — starting out as a writer on The X-Files, as alluded to, he is today best known as the creator of the Breaking Bad universe, with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul being considered two of the best TV shows ever made. Pluribus marked a major shift for him, back into sci-fi, but the critical reception has been equally outstanding.

Pluribus currently has a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it remained at the top of the streaming charts for weeks following its premiere. Additionally, Rhea Seehorn won the Critics’ Choice Award and the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series, while Pluribus was swiftly added to the list of Best Drama Series nominees, alongside the likes of Severance and The White Lotus.

All episodes of Pluribus are available to stream on Apple TV.
