Ryan Reynolds’ New Action Movie ‘Mayday’ Gets First Look & Release Date From Apple TV

Ryan Reynolds’ New Action Movie ‘Mayday’ Gets First Look & Release Date From Apple TV

Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh team up in our first look at Mayday, a genre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that flips the spy thriller on its head. Coming courtesy of Apple TV, Mayday finds Reynolds and Branagh taking the lead as a U.S. Navy pilot who finds himself stranded behind enemy lines and forming an unlikely alliance with an ex-KGB agent. Will Mayday become a hit amid the current political climate? We shall see, as the action-adventure outing is set to be released later this year.

Today, Apple TV has unveiled the first-look image for the highly anticipated feature, Mayday, as well as announcing that the action outing will premiere globally on Apple TV on Friday, September 4, 2026. Alongside Reynolds and Branagh, the ensemble cast includes Marcin Dorocinski, Maria Bakalova, David Morse and more. You can check out the official synopsis for Mayday below…

When hot shot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly (Reynolds) is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War, the operation implodes, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. Discovered by Nikolai Ustinov (Branagh), a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, Troy thinks he’s toast – but could an unlikely alliance between the two lead to Troy’s rescue, and a bond neither saw coming?

‘Mayday’ Is From the Directors Behind ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’

An Apple Original Film hailing from Skydance Media, Mayday is written, directed, and produced by Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger produce for Skydance, alongside Maximum Effort’s Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau. Ryan Reynolds and George Dewey, through Maximum Effort, along with John G. Scotti, serve as executive producers.

Considering the talent involved, including Deadpool actor and bankable star Ryan Reynolds, it’s surprising that Mayday won’t get a theatrical release date. Instead, the action outing will debut on streaming, giving audiences the chance to watch the comedic stylings of Reynolds butt up against the renowned Thespian that is Kenneth Branagh. However, while Branagh is best known for his adaptations of Shakespeare, the Academy Award winner is no stranger to comedy and will no doubt keep Reynolds’ sarcastic wit in check.

Branagh has featured in the genre several times over his long and illustrious career, delivering quips as both Poirot in the Agatha Christie franchise and as Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, as well as starring as part of the ensemble comedy drama Peter’s Friends, directing the musical comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost, bringing Shakespeare’s penchant for comedy to life with Much Ado About Nothing, and combining The Bard with the laughs in In the Bleak Midwinter. And, of course, who could forget the crown jewel of his comedy career: the villainous Dr. Arliss Loveless in the hilariously awful Wild Wild West.
