FAW celebrates roots with Wrexham-based mural

February 3 – The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has unveiled a Wrexham-based mural celebrating 150 years of Welsh football, placing the town once again at the centre of the national game as the Association celebrates a significant anniversary year.

The FAW was founded at a meeting held at the Wynnstay Arms Hotel in Wrexham in 1876 and the city has since become Welsh football’s most well-known global ambassador because of the success of Hollywood’s Ryan Reynolds at Wrexham AFC.

Installed opposite the site of the planned Football Museum Wales, the mural coincides with the launch of the adidas Cymru 150th Anniversary jersey.

Designed by artist Visually Speaking and delivered by Avant Cymru’s graffiti artists, the mural places the Cymru shirt at the heart of the narrative. The FAW describe the mural as a “dragon’s tail flowing into a DNA-style helix, formed from patterns of historic national kits, tracing the evolution of the men’s and women’s national teams across generations”.

The anniversary strip sits at its centre, with the number 150 woven through the design.

The town’s modern resurgence, driven by the global reach of a Disney+ documentary into Wrexham AFC, has given Welsh football an international platform few could have imagined a decade ago.

Delivered in collaboration with long-term kit partners Adidas, the mural adds a lasting public tribute in a city that now connects Welsh football’s origins with its modern reinvention.

On the international stage, the Welsh national team will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup qualifying playoff semifinals in March. Should Wales win, they will face either Italy or Northern Ireland in a winner-takes-all match for a spot at this summer’s tournament.
