Newcastle United official announcement confirms Jamaal Lascelles has left the club

Tuesday morning has brought official confirmation that Jamaal Lascelles has left Newcastle United.

The former NUFC having played only 19 minutes of first team football this season, two brief cameos off the bench.

The official Newcastle United announcement stating; ‘Jamaal Lascelles has completed a permanent switch to Leicester City, bringing an end to an outstanding decade at St. James’ Park.’

The 32 year old hopefully now set to find regular first team football again with Leicester City.

The official NUFC release going on to say; ‘Everybody at Newcastle United wishes Jamaal the very best of luck for the future and thanks him for his outstanding contribution to the club. He will always be welcome at St. James’ Park.’

Whilst many Newcastle United fans had made the assumption that Jamaal Lascelles was on the injury list, some of the more reliable journalists covering NUFC had reported that he was simply frozen out of the first team picture and so a move elsewhere made sense for all parties.

Jamaal Lascelles was born in Derby but joined local rivals Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United signing him from there for around £4m back in 2014. Lascelles was then instantly loaned back to Forest for a season, along with Karl Darlow who had signed for NUFC from the same club on a similar deal and fee at the same time.

A number of Championship clubs were keen to sign Jamaal Lascelles but he has chosen to return to the East Midlands and sign for Leicester City.

At a young age he became Newcastle United captain under Rafa Benitez, having impressed when speaking out in the dressing room during a time when things were at such a low ebb, the club relegated in 2015/16.

Jamaal Lascelles leading the Newcastle United team back to the Premier League and in Rafa’s two Premier League seasons in charge, each season only six other PL clubs conceded less goals than United.

Leicester City are in a bit of a mess and having lost six of their last nine league matches, want to ensure they aren’t dragged into a relegation battle. Only three Championship clubs have conceded more goals than the 45 the Foxes have leaked so far.

I think clearly this looks like a good move for all parties and all Newcastle United fans will wish Jamaal Lascelles the very best, an excellent leader on and off the pitch who gave his all for NUFC.

The Newcastle United official announcement going on to say; ‘Jamaal Lascelles led United to the 2016/17 Championship title and helped secure the club’s top-flight status as he established himself as a Premier League regular in the years that followed. Jamaal also played a key part in the club’s recent success, notably captaining the side for the historic 4-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain in October 2023.’

It was great to see in March 2025 that Jamaal Lascelles was able to be part of the celebrations when United at last won a trophy; ‘Injury ruled him out of action last season but he retained a valuable role within the first-team leadership group, underlined as he lifted the Carabao Cup trophy alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier at Wembley.’
