It looks likely to be a quiet day on the incomings front, but one outgoing has been sanctioned as Jamaal Lascelles prepares to leave Newcastle United.
After almost 12 years on Tyneside, it emerged late on Sunday night that the centre-back is set to for a move to the Championship.
As reported by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Lascelles will join Leicester City in a deadline day move, seeing him return to the Midlands after a previous spell with Nottingham Forest.
Downie reports that Newcastle have agreed to let the 32-year-old leave the club, with a medical booked in for the experienced defender to join the Foxes.
As revealed yesterday, Birmingham City were one of five other Championship clubs showing interest in the former Newcastle skipper, but it appears that Leicester have won the race for his signature.
The second tier side currently sit 18th in the table and have endured a difficult campaign following relegation from the Premier League last summer, with Wout Faes’ recent switch to Monaco also leaving them light on centre-backs.
Lascelles was out of contract this summer and has only made two cameo appearances in the Premier League all season. Injuries have marred much of his final few years at St James’ Park after slipping behind Botman, Burn, Thiaw and Schar in the pecking order, but he’s been a huge presence behind the scenes over the past decade.
He joined during a tough Mike Ashley era, captained us on our way to the Championship title, helped us survive in the Premier League under Benitez and Bruce, kept Kylian Mbappe quiet in the Champions League and lifted our first trophy for 70 years alongside Bruno and Trippier last March.
A leader of men and a brilliant servant to this club through the good, bad and ugly.
Thank you and good luck, Jamaal!
