It ended Liverpool 4 Newcastle 1.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.
An interesting game at Anfield…
Plenty to talk about after this one.
On this occasion it is The Armchair Fan.
POSITIVES
First 36 minutes
What a start from the Toon!
For the first 36 minutes we were all over the reigning league champions.
Wave after wave of Newcastle attacks saw Barnes desperately unlucky to smack an effort off the post before the dam eventually burst and Gordon picked his spot, burying an effort at the Kop end to deservedly put the Toon ahead.
Goal!
The sight of the travelling Toon Army going wild at Anfield, brought hope that 30+ of misery at this place was about to be dispelled.
Anthony Gordon hadn’t scored a league goal from open play all season, hopefully this will be the first of many as he replicates his Champions League form and fires us up the table.
Squad depth
The last two matches have seen Eddie Howe a bit more experimental with his team selection and substitutes.
Willock and Ramsey both had a great game in midweek and the return of Burn and Osula are most welcome.
Hopefully the increase in options will allow us to continue to fight on all four fronts.
NEGATIVES
Result
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, football is a results business and no amount of ‘we played well for 36 minutes’ will change that.
The fact of the matter is we were on the wrong end of a 4-1 hiding.
This was a dreadful result that has also put a dent in our goal difference.
Giving away leads
What do Arsenal, West Ham, Brentford, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool have in common?
They’ve all come from behind to take something from NUFC this season.
To be leading in all six of these matches and only take two points from a potential eighteen is criminal.
The fact that we’re only seven points off the top four means that this trait is very likely to cost us big time come the end of the season.
Away form
Just two Premier League away wins from twelve games on the road is nowhere near good enough and is a recipe for spending the rest of the season languishing in the midtable positions.
Home form won’t save us and with our next three league away games coming at Spurs, Man City and Chelsea, it would take a brave person to predict an upturn in taking points on our travels any time soon.
