‘Revolver Lily’ Clip Brings ‘John Wick’-Style Action to the Roaring Twenties

John Wick may have killed people with a pencil, but he’s got nothing on Revolver Lily, who brings the particular set of skills and looming presence of Baba Yaga to the 1920s in this tale of a former assassin who must resurrect her penchant for violence to protect a young boy. Yes, it is very much John Wick meets Taken with a vintage twist, and no, you are not dreaming.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Isao Yukisada, Revolver Lily is a stylish new action thriller led by Ayase Haruka (Our Little Sister, Ichi), whose action hero debut has already been nominated for Best Actress at the 2024 Japanese Academy Awards. Boasting the kind of killer hook that action thriller classics are made of with this tale of a former elite assassin who must wage a one-man (or, in this case, woman) war, the newly released clip, “Train Trespass,” teases this pitch-perfect combination of John Wick with the Roaring Twenties.

Based on the novel of the same name by Kyo Nagaura, Revolver Lily also stars Hasegawa Hiroki (Shin Godzilla), Hamura Jinsei (Gold Boy), Shishido Kavaka (Trillion Game), Furukawa Kotone, Shimizu Hiroya, Jesse Sato Jiro, Fukikoshi Mitsuru, Uchida Asahi, Itao Itsuji, Hashizume Isao, Ishibashi Renji, Abe Sadawo, Nomura Mansai, and Toyokawa Etsushi. After making its debut back in 2023, Revolver Lily is now available via Digital streaming, courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment, with the movie hitting Blu-ray and DVD exclusively through Amazon on February 10. To entice you, you can check out the official synopsis and footage below…

Once upon a time, Yuri was one of Japan’s deadliest assassins, but she’s retired now and spends her days running an underground brothel. A news report about a former colleague who has died under mysterious circumstances doesn’t quite sit right. The dead man’s son is now the target of a military manhunt, and Yuri will do whatever it takes to keep him safe.

‘Revolver Lily’s Particular Set of Skills Would Make Even Baba Yaga Blush

This new Revolver Lily footage sets the scene perfectly, harking back to action thriller tropes. Beginning with a young boy being harassed by men with guns, a mysterious woman’s steely resolve stands in stark difference to the fear felt by the rest of the passengers. Unable to simply watch what’s happening, she stands up and soon reveals herself to be far from the ordinary member of the public she seemed. Dispatching each of her adversaries with the sorts of skills that would make Keanu Reeves’ dog-loving assassin think twice, the clip is sure to pique the interest of many an action thriller fan.

While Revolver Lily has so far flown under the radar in the Western world, newly emerging reviews have heaped praise on the period action thriller, with critics calling it “A Satiating Spy Thriller With A Worthy Star,” and “an epic, bloody panorama” with a new action hero that’s “an armed weapon that knows her destination, and it’s thrilling to watch her fly.”
