Sydney Sweeney Hits Back at “MAGA Barbie” Criticism

Sydney Sweeney has pushed back on being seen as a “MAGA Barbie” by the press, once again emphasising that she has no interest in discussing politics and has “always been here to make art.” After several controversial months in the latter half of 2025, Sweeney is looking to make 2026 an altogether more successful year, but the label being assigned to her is something she says she cannot control.

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, Sweeney was asked about her politics and the way she has been seen by many as a symbol for Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again following. The Housemade star responded:

“I’ve never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.”

Sweeney was also questioned on why she has not expressly attempted to challenge the opinion that is being widely spread about her. In response, she suggested that there isn’t much point as people will twist the truth for their own gain no matter what she says.

“I haven’t figured it out. I’m not a hateful person. If I say, ‘That’s not true,’ they’ll come at me like, ‘You’re just saying that to look better.’ There’s no winning. There’s never any winning. I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am. I can’t make everyone love me. I know what I stand for.

“It’s definitely not a comfortable thing to have people saying what you believe or think, especially when that doesn’t align with you. It’s been a weird thing having to navigate and digest, because it’s not me. None of it is me.”
