The first major system update of 2026 has landed for the PlayStation 5, and it adds a pretty big new feature… though for the life of me I can’t work out why anyone would willingly turn this particular feature on. Maybe I’m just a really awful person.
The latest PlayStation 5 system update adds the ability to turn on read receipts so that you can show other players when you’ve read their messages. Genuinely, I can’t fathom why you would want to turn on an option that lets your friends know you’re choosing to ignore them. I guess this could work for parents checking in on their kids, but beyond that… bizarre. As far as system updates go, this is one of the strangest.

The PlayStation 5 Isn’t Going Anywhere
It’s here for a while yet
Recent reports suggest the PlayStation 6 release window has been delayed, giving us more time with the PlayStation 5. That suits most gamers just fine, with many agreeing the PS5 still hasn’t really established itself yet, and could do with a few more years to get those last few era-defining exclusives under its belt.
Then again, with games taking as long as they do to make these days, we might not end up seeing games like The Last of Us Part 3 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 until the PlayStation 6 generation anyway, Watch this space, and enjoy the time you have with you PlayStation 5 while you can.
