Former Superman star Dean Cain has stepped up to defend Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents that were involved in the shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis over the weekend, an event that has been the subject of furious debate over the last few days.
While many stars, including Pedro Pascal, Billie Eilish, Natalie Portman, and, on his Monday night show, Jimmy Kimmel, have shared their view on the matter, Cain has a different take on things to many, and offered his own view of the incident. Speaking to TMZ, he said:
“I don’t know all of the events leading up to this moment. I do know that law enforcement, certainly ICE and Border Patrol, have been under a tremendous amount of pressure and attacks, and they’re getting tremendous abuse from what I completely believe is 100 percent organized opposition.
“If someone is committing a felony — which would be obstructing law enforcement, ICE, federal agents from doing their job, impeding and obstructing, that’s a felony — maybe they were just trying to take him down at that point in time.”
Since the December crackdown on immigration in Minnesota, Pretti is the second U.S. citizen to have been shot and killed by ICE agents. This latest incident has been seen across the internet from several angles recorded on mobile phones as it unfolded. The footage shows Pretti approaching agents with a cell phone in his hand, as they aggressively detain a woman. After being pepper sprayed by the agents, Pretti is stuck on the head and tackled to the ground before shots are heard, with the agents backing off to reveal Pretti’s body lying in the snow.
Dean Cain Claims Alex Pretti Made a Mistake Attempting to Intervene in ICE Business
Cain continues to say that he doesn’t believe that Pretti was “just being a peaceful protester,” and that “it was a very bad idea to engage physically with federal law enforcement while armed.” He added, “He’s standing between law enforcement officers and that woman — that’s a mistake in its own right. And doing it while armed is a bad, bad idea.”
“If he was instructed to get out of the road, if he was asked to move to a different direction or told or ordered to do so, you’re starting to impede. How many times had he had communications with law enforcement before that moment? Why was he standing in the street? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered. He may have been impeding, he may have himself become a target, maybe he was standing in front of ICE vehicles.”
Cain then went on to lay the blame for the incident on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, something that echoes sentiments of President Trump. According to Cain, Democrats are “not cooperating, [calling] them Gestapo and calling them modern-day Nazis, and they’re telling them to fight them in the streets and do these things.”
Despite Cain’s comments on Pretti being “armed” during the incident, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s confirmation that the nurse had a semi-automatic handgun on their person at the time only shows that Pretti was within their legal rights to carry a handgun in public with a permit, as per Minnesota state law. At no point in video footage is Pretti seen taking out the weapon and brandishing it at agents. It is clear that there are still questions to be answered, as Cain suggests, but most people don’t believe that those questions are about Pretti’s actions, but those of the agents involved in this tragic incident.
