Some movies are planned for years, others happen in the blink of an eye thanks to nothing but chance and a determination from two people who really want to see it happen. That latter is true of The Wrecking Crew, a movie that was made on a whim and has now delivered an action-packed Rotten Tomatoes score ahead of its release later this week.
It seems like only months since Dave Bautista put out a speculative tweet suggesting that he and Jason Momoa needed to get together with director David Leitch to make a “Lethal Weapon-style buddy cop movie. Five years later, that movie has become The Wrecking Crew, and Bautista and Momoa have been joined by a healthy cast including Morena Baccarin, Jacob Batalon, and Temuera Morrison. While Leitch did not join the party, Ángel Manuel Soto stepped into the director’s role on the movie, and clearly brought things together nicely as the first reviews arrived.
The Wrecking Crew debuted with an 85% score at the time of writing, with a lot of praise being lavished on the chemistry between the leading men. Many reviews have been happy to see an action movie that is as much fun as it is violent. For Collider‘s Jeff Ewing, “Momoa and Bautista feel born to play very different, equally powerful brothers, with a strong dynamic, and each with seasoned comedic timing and action chops.” Frank Scheck of THR says, “Movies like this depends almost entirely on chemistry between the costars, and fortunately Bautista and Momoa have plenty of it.” MovieWeb‘s own Julian Roman’s 3.5/5 review puts it:
“The Wrecking Crew is a no-holds-barred action comedy that gleefully embraces savage extremes to entertaining effect. Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa are fantastic in a raunchy, bloody, and swift narrative that never takes its foot of the gas.”
Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista Have Made Magic from the Ultimate Long Shot
As noted earlier, the idea for The Wrecking Crew originated when Bautista and Momoa connected online over the idea that they would love to do a movie together. From one social media post from Bautista saying he was just “throwing it out into the atmosphere and see what happens,” to Momoa revealed a few days later on The Late Late Show that the pair had decided that the movie “sells itself” and were going ahead to try and get it made.
It may have taken five years to get there, with Momoa having been busy with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, A Minecraft Movie, the TV series Chief of War, and this summer’s Supergirl, and Bautista appearing in Knock at the Cabin, The Killer’s Game, and In the Lost Lands. Having finally found time to get things together to bring The Wrecking Crew together, it seems it has massively paid off so far. While the film will be released direct to Prime Video on Jan. 28 and will not have a moment to shine in theaters, it is almost guaranteed to take the top spot on the chart very quickly. For those who still don’t know what The Wrecking Crew is about, you can check out the synopsis below.
