James Cameron’s Billie Eilish ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour in 3D’ Release Delayed

James Cameron’s Billie Eilish ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour in 3D’ Release Delayed

James Cameron has been dominating the box office with Avatar: Fire and Ash, but his next movie just pushed back its release date. While the director has become known for his bombastic fantasy action franchise, his next movie is something very different but just as technologically advanced as he delivers Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, his 3D Billie Eilish concert movie.

The groundbreaking 3D concert movie is directed and produced by Cameron and was recorded during Eilish’s 2025 tour on its stop in Manchester, U.K. Originally set to release on Mar. 20, 2026, Cameron has now revealed in an Instagram post that the film is shifting to a new May 8, 2026, release date.

“We’re refining the cut; dialing in cool, new 3D tech; adding some special behind-the-scenes we know you’ll love. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR (LIVE IN 3D) will now release Friday, May 8th. Worth the wait!”

The production of the movie has been every bit as technical as Cameron’s biggest blockbusters. Originally announced by Eilish in July 2025 when she completed the U.K. leg of her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour, the exact nature of the project remained under wraps until it was unveiled as a theatrically released concert movie.

Like many of Cameron’s movies, the film utilized the latest technology, with a partnership between Meta Platforms and Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision being used. According to Cameron, the idea of doing the 3D movie was his idea, one he came up with while chatting with Eilish’s mother, Maggie, with whom he is friends. He said at the time:

“I was talking to Billie’s mom, Maggie, who’s really into a lot of the same food choice and sustainability issues that my wife Susie and I are. That’s why we’re vegan and Maggie’s vegan. She does food programs around Billie’s tour, and she’s coming in as an executive producer on our sequel to The Game Changers, which is about plant-based athletes.”

Concert Movies Have Been Huge Recently

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
Disney+

While it was once almost impossible to see anything more than a few highlights of a music concert without actually being at the concert, things have changed in the last decade with many big artists finding their way into theaters with specially recorded concerts, or sometimes, even live streams.

Olivia Rodrigo released her GUTS World Tour concert on Netflix, Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour film was released in cinemas before being made available on Prime Video, and Taylor Swift took over cinemas with The Eras Tour, which subsequently became a huge hit on Disney+. Other artists to have released special concert movies include Coldplay, BTS, Westlife, and many more.

With her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour in 3D movie, Eilish is not simply releasing a standard concert movie, and you would not really expect that of James Cameron. Instead, audiences will be given an immersive experience that, as per the visionary director’s style, will attempt to set a new bar for concert movies of the future. Fans will now be able to catch it in cinemas on May 8, 2026.
