Riz Ahmed “Walks Out” of Interview After Jacob Elordi James Bond Casting Quip

Riz Ahmed “Walks Out” of Interview After Jacob Elordi James Bond Casting Quip

When it comes to the casting of the new James Bond, there are many people willing to throw their hat in the ring. Riz Ahmed considers his new series, Bait, to be his audition to take over from Daniel Craig as 007, and “walked out” of an interview when it was suggested that rumored Bond frontrunner Jacob Elordi would be better.

Of course, none of this was done with any serious anger or frustration, as it was simply Ahmed playing up for the cameras before returning to continue the Variety interview alongside his Bait costar Guz Kahn. Prior to the “walkout,” Ahmed explained that his new series, which is all about a struggling actor who has his James Bond audition go viral, was inspired by the idea that life is often like one big audition, which led him to ponder how the show is his Bond audition.

“Everyone has an audition for Bond. Daniel Craig’s was ‘Layer Cake’… This is my audition for Bond. I dare anyone to watch this show and think we shouldn’t play Bond.”

When the interviewer pointed out that Jacob Elordi’s name has recently risen to the top of the current Bond hopefuls list, Ahmed responded, “I don’t mind who plays James Bond as long as it is me.” Kahn wasted no time in following up with, “You know, the more interviews we do, the more I’m convinced it’s absolutely not gonna be you. (To interviewer off camera) You said Jacob Elordi? I don’t even know who that is, but it’s likely that he’s gonna be James Bond over Riz Ahmed.”

This was the point Ahmed stood up and left the room for a few moments before returning and continuing the interview.

Who Will Be the Next James Bond?

Universal Pictures

In the last several months, many names have come and gone when the question of who will be the next James Bond is asked. There are, though, certain names that continue to appear on the frontrunner list, and Elordi is reportedly now one of them.

Along with the Oscar-nominated Frankenstein and Wuthering Heights star, others said to be circling the coveted role with different degrees of certainty behind them include former Fantastic Beasts star Callum Turner, who supposedly gained a huge boost in odds in the last couple of weeks. He now joins old favorites like Tom Holland, Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor Johnson – none of who are likely to be in any kind of contention if the truth were told – and lesser known names like Slow Horses’ Jack Lowden, Happy Valley star James Norton, Babygirl’s Harris Dickinson, and The White Lotus‘ Theo James, who all fit with the suggested that the next Bond will not be a massive Hollywood name, but someone who can grow into the role.

In the end, it has been iterated several times that casting for the next James Bond will not happen until the script is complete and director Denis Villeneuve knows exactly what will be required of the actor who will potentially be playing 007 for the next decade. For that reason alone, we can expect several more months of rumors and speculation before we finally discover who will be taking on one of the biggest roles in cinema.
