January 23 – AFC Bournemouth have received planning approval to carry out a package of ‘modernisation works’ at the Vitality Stadium, with the Premier League club outlining the project as a key step in its longer-term redevelopment plans.
The project was granted approval by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, clearing the way for upgrades aimed at improving infrastructure, safety and the overall matchday experience.
The approved works include the installation of a new perimeter fence and turnstile system, revised pedestrian and cycle access routes, a dedicated outside broadcast compound and the enclosure of the West Stand terraces.
While the immediate focus is on operational improvements, the club views the project as laying the groundwork for future development at the site. The total cost of the redevelopment is expected to be £90 million.
Cherries owner Bill Foley described the decision as a significant milestone. “This is an exciting and important moment for the club,” he said. “Our proposed new stadium reflects not only our ambition on the pitch, but also our commitment to investing in the community.
“The project will deliver long-term benefits for supporters, local residents, and the wider region beyond the BCP area.”
Bournemouth have not yet provided a construction timeline, but the approval removes a major hurdle as the club looks to modernise a stadium that has undergone relatively limited redevelopment since its expansion earlier in the decade.
The Cherries, who have the smallest stadium in the Premier League by a significant margin (11,307 seats), are expected to soon join the growing list of top-flight sides gearing up for stadium expansion, including Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.
Add that to the already-completed development projects at Liverpool, Everton and Fulham, and it’s clear to see where English clubs are splashing the cash.
Andoni Iraola’s side have had a mixed season having sold a number of key players, bur are still expected to stay comfortably clear of the relegation zone for another season, equipping the club with more financial confidence to move forward with operations like stadium expansion.
