Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are officially set to return in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the prequel movie adapting Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel. As the next movie in the Hunger Games franchise nears its November 2026 release, the risk surrounding Katniss and Peeta’s return will only grow.
Like the book, Sunrise on the Reaping will follow Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games, meaning the movie is set 24 years before the start of the original story within the Hunger Games timeline. Based on the known lore and the fact that Haymitch served as a mentor to Katniss and Peeta, we already knew Haymitch wins the 50th Hunger Games.
That said, Sunrise on the Reaping also delves into Haymitch’s life before and after the Games, in addition to revealing what actually happened to his fellow tributes during the Second Quarter Quell. While there will be a number of returning Hunger Games characters in the upcoming prequel, fans can also expect Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson to reprise their roles.
The Returns Of Jennifer Lawrence & Josh Hutcherson In Sunrise On The Reaping Will Be Brief
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson starred as Katniss and Peeta for the first four movies of the Hunger Games franchise, which made up the primary story. That main story came to an end in 2015 with the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, marking the last time Lawrence and Hutcherson appeared in the franchise.
Even though subsequent novels served as prequels, Sunrise on the Reaping includes an epilogue set after the events of Mockingjay and features Haymitch, Katniss, and Peeta. All still residing in District 12’s Victor’s Village, the epilogue reveals that Haymitch eventually opens up to Katniss and Peeta about his past, including his family, the friends he lost in the Hunger Games, and the love of his life, Lenore Dove.
While it’s exciting to get another glimpse into the lives of Katniss and Peeta, it’s important to remember that the epilogue is relatively short. Though it serves as an update about three key members of the Hunger Games franchise, it doesn’t mean Lawrence and Hutcherson will have a large presence in Sunrise on the Reaping.
Katniss and Peeta’s roles in Sunrise on the Reaping will presumably be more like cameos than anything substantial, unless director Francis Lawrence has a surprise planned that would deviate from the book. Even with the duo’s return, the epilogue is primarily meant to show how far Haymitch has come by being able to share details about his traumatic past with the people he currently trusts the most.
Why The Hunger Games Franchise Should Have Kept Katniss & Peeta’s Movie Return A Secret
When Katniss and Peeta appeared in Sunrise on the Reaping‘s epilogue, many wondered what that would mean for the upcoming movie adaptation. There had always been hope that the characters would return to the movie franchise in some way, and Collins’ 2025 book finally paved the way for that to happen.
Even with the hope, it’s surprising that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson were confirmed to return to the franchise so soon before the movie is set to release. It’s certainly a welcome announcement for fans of the franchise, but the expectations surrounding Katniss and Peeta’s returns are already increasing, which could backfire a bit.
The details surrounding Katniss and Peeta’s returns are already dominating a lot of the discussions surrounding the movie, when it should be about Haymitch and the prequel characters. Sunrise on the Reaping‘s cast and even Jennifer Lawrence herself have brought up her Hunger Games return in recent interviews, and that will only become more frequent as the release gets closer.
Rather than attempt to keep the official returns a secret as long as possible, the franchise is embracing the characters to build more hype. The epilogue should be seen as an added bonus for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, not the moment all fans are waiting for during the entire movie.
