Karen Gillan has been teasing Jumanji fans with a new look at the return of Ruby Roundhouse and Jack Black’s Shelly Oberon in the real world as the pair film the fourth movie in the franchise – Yes, it is the fourth in the franchise, which began with Robin Williams’ 1995 original.
In a set of photos from Jumanji 4 shared on X, Gillan is seen outside a very un-Jumanji city building with Christmas decorations and what appears to be snow on the ground, suggesting a festive adventure that will see the “game” versions of the characters coming into the real world. One thing that certainly isn’t changing in the new movie is the often-controversial skimpy outfit worn by Gillan…although she certainly doesn’t have an issue wearing it, even in what looks like chilly weather.
Previously, the short shorts and tight-fitting top worn by Gillan’s character have been criticized by those who did not get the in-joke of her character before Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was released. Back in 2016, Gillan responded to the controversy over her costume, saying, “Yes I’m wearing child sized clothes and YES there is a reason!” Even after the reason was revealed, it still didn’t stop some people complaining again when Jumanji: The Next Level was released.
Meanwhile, Jack Black’s costume did not cause any controversy at all, and he is back in his usual suit and pith helmet combo as he appears in one of Gillan’s photos with her and her young daughter, Clementine, who was born in late 2024. While Clementine will seemingly not be in the movie, we can expect to see more images of other stars such as Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart appearing in some on-set images a filming continues. A previous image featuring all four stars was revealed in November last year.
The ‘Jumanji’ Franchise Has Taken Quite a While With Its New Movie
It has been six years since Jumanji: The Next Level was released in 2019, and there have been plenty of times that it appeared another movie would not happen at all. However, late last year, it was finally announced that the currently untitled film will be released on Dec. 11, 2026.
There are currently no details known about the plot of the latest installment, but fans should make the most of it when it does arrive, as this will be the last round of adventure for the foursome. When announcing the start of production, Johnson wrote:
“Officially kicking off production of Jumanji, at our cast table read in Los Angeles – where we will film as well. What a massive, fun, heartfelt adventure. Feels emotionally appropriate for our beloved Jumanji franchise to end on this beautiful grace note of our final film. Amazing to get the whole gang back together, and our jaws were hurting from laughing so hard. We all talked about how much we’ve missed this kinda joy and fun. Let’s make a good one.”
While the Jumanji franchise has been immensely popular, this December it will face the ultimate challenge of opening just a week before both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part 3. In one of the busiest festive periods in years, it will be interesting to see how well Jumanji 4 can in its first week before the big face-off of the season takes over the box office on Dec. 18, 2026.
