Sam Raimi Reveals DC Movies He Attempted to Make & Characters He Would Love to Get His Hands On

Sam Raimi has come a long way since being a budding, inventive filmmaker trudging through swamps with Bruce Campbell and a camera to make The Evil Dead. While he has been involved in some of the most successful superhero movies of all time with his Spider-Man trilogy and his Marvel return for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he has never had a crack at a DC movie, but not through want of trying.

Raimi is behind the camera in the new horror survival thriller, Send Help, in which Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien star as an employee and her boss who find themselves stranded on a desert island where they must survive each other as well as the elements. While discussing the Jan. 30 release, Raimi told MovieWeb about which DC movies he already attempted to make, and which he would love to be involved in.

“I love Batman. I tried to make a Batman film. I couldn’t get the rights. I love The Shadow. I also couldn’t get the rights to that one. But, um, Superman’s always been one of my favorites. Yeah, there’s a tremendous amount of DC characters that I love, and it would just take the writers to come up with an original story based on their character, that’s true to the character and part of their real universe, not something that disappoints the fans, but something that’s based on the fans love of the character and brings out the best moment of those characters and their proper conflicts, or the right challenges for the right hero. If it was a story that had a real journey for that particular individual. Then I’d love to make the movie.”

Fans Still Want Sam Raimi to Make ‘Spider-Man 4’

Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man

While the Marvel multiverse has opened up doors to characters and projects long thought lost, one project that still doesn’t seem to be on the cards is for Raimi to return to the Spider-Man franchise with a new outing for Tobey Maguire’s older web-slinger.

Although Maguire made a pleasing return to his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Tom Holland’s third MCU solo outing, Spider-Man: No Way Home, along with former villains of Raimi’s movies Green Goblin, Sandman, and Doc Ock, it seems that other than a possible appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi won’t be collaborating on a new solo Spider-Man sequel.

This is perhaps not that surprising. Although Hugh Jackman recently schniked his claws back in place to play Wolverine, and original X-Men stars like James Marsden and Rebecca Rominj will be back for Avengers: Doomsday, Maguire’s future in the franchise would probably be in a cameo or something similar to No Way Home rather than a full new movie. However, it is always hard to rule anything out right now. With the multiverse saga heading towards a conclusion, if Marvel Studios is planning to do anything with characters that originated in other universes, then now would be the time to deliver.
