Streaming platform Prime Video has announced a brand-new crime drama created by Bridge of Spies scribe Matt Charman. Titled Dirty, the series will shoot in the UK this September and centers around trainee detective Eva Bennett, who returns to Manchester to join a murder investigation orchestrated by her estranged and legendary mother, DCI Lois Mercer (per Variety). As their complex relationship falls back into old habits, buried truths rise to the surface again as Mercer’s history of crime forces her daughter to make a choice between blood and justice.
Charman, who was Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay in 2016 — ultimately beaten by Spotlight duo Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy — has carved a “fresh, provocative, and emotionally-charged” spin on the classic British police thriller here, which was greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios vice president of international originals, Nicole Clemens, last year.
“Having long admired Matt’s exceptional work, I am thrilled we are collaborating with him on this remarkable project,” said Clemens in a statement. “Centered on two extraordinarily powerful women, it delivers the bold, character-driven storytelling that global Prime Video audiences have come to expect, and we look forward to sharing it with viewers around the world.” Charman himself added:
“I love the power and the volatility of these two women. There are no limits on what either of them is capable of, which makes the potential of every scene explosive. Nicole and the entire team at Amazon understood the show instantly — they’re deeply passionate about the blend of character-driven drama and relentless propulsion. I can’t wait to share what we’ve been cooking up.”
Prime Video’s British Crime Thriller Selection
Whilst Prime Video subscribers await the arrival of Dirty, which will most likely happen in the summer of 2027, there are loads of quality British crime thrillers to pick from. Your first port of call should be the three-season wonder, The Fall, led by Gillian Anderson as DS Stella Gibson and Jamie Doran as the serial killer she’s hunting down in Northern Ireland, Paul Spector. The glacial Gibson is one of Anderson’s greatest-ever characters; if The X Files didn’t have such a fervent audience cultivated over decades, she might’ve even topped the pile.
When you’re done with The Fall, there’s then Tin Star (with Tim Roth), Broadchurch (David Tennant and Olivia Colman), Three Pines (Alfred Molina), Unforgotten (Nicola Walker), and of course, the anti-corruption modern classic Line of Duty. The latter, which is officially coming back for a seventh season, holds the record for most-watched episode of any UK drama thanks to its season 6 finale. 12.8 million people tuned in on BBC One back in May 2021.
