I have just been checking and updating the situation with Newcastle United players and how close they are to suspension in both Champions League and Premier League.
This is up to today, Thursday 22 January.
So how many yellow cards have been accumulated in the Premier League and Champions League, seeing how close Newcastle United players are to missing matches.
The Premier League rules are that if you pick up five bookings in the opening 19 PL games of the season, you get a one match suspension.
Then 10 yellow cards within the first 32 PL games of the season earns a two game ban.
With a three game suspension if you manage to pick up 15 yellow cards in a Premier League season.
After 22 Newcastle United matches in the Premier League this season, here is the situation with PL yellow cards..
The 2025/26 Premier League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:
Joelinton 5, Bruno 4, Burn 3(*), Thiaw 3, Tonali 3, Ramsey 2, Gordon 2, Livramento 1, Schar 1, Trippier 1, Pope 1, Willock 1, Botman 1, Hall 1, Wissa 1
(Dan Burn has actually picked up five Premier League yellows in total but only three of them count towards the accumulated total for suspension purposes, as two came in the Brentford match and that brought a red card and instant one game suspension)
A pretty healthy situation, Joelinton would need to pick up five bookings in the next ten Premier League matches, to pick up a two game suspension. Bruno would need six, whilst the others needing seven or more.
What about Champions League and potential suspension for Newcastle United players?
These are the UEFA rules…
Article 63.02
From the first match in the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions, that did not result in a red card, as well as after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).
Article 63.03
Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward to the next stage of the competition, except in the cases described in Article 63.04 below.
Article 63.04
Exceptionally, all yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire on completion of the play-offs. They are not carried forward to the league phase. In addition, all yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals. They are not carried forward to the semi-finals.
The 2025/26 Champions League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:
Burn 2, Joelinton 2, Thiaw 2, Ramsdale 1, Bruno 1, Gordon 1, Willock 1, Tonali 1
Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali the two Newcastle United player to be booked against PSV on Wednesday night.
As you can see from the rules above, if Newcastle win against PSG then they go through to the last 16 and all yellow cards expire.
However, if United have to do the play-off round, then anybody getting a third yellow, against PSG, would miss the first leg of the play-off.
Whilst if anybody picked up a third yellow in the first leg of a play-off, they would miss the second leg.
